    DA obviously isn't working

I believe it was founded in 2007. So it is heading into year #10 of existence and we see no signs of big time players coming out of the DA and improving the US Men's National Team. It is just another money maker for somebody to line their pockets. Unfortunately youth soccer has turned into more of a business then actually developing good soccer players.

What is the philosophy of US Soccer of developing good soccer players? Do we focus enough on the technical part of the game? I personally don't think so. Watching the USMNT team play and some of the guys are average at best technically to the point where the team has a hard time connecting 3-4 passes together.

Please show me the list of soccer power nations for whom soccer is the 4th or 5th most popular sport in their country?

That's a horrible excuse. We still probably have more kids playing soccer even as a 4th or 5th choice that most other countries. Problem is we don't spend enough time on the technical parts of the game, and kids don't spend enough time actually watching soccer.

        Fact:

Soccer is the second most popular youth sport in the U.S. behind basketball, but ahead of baseball and well ahead of football.

The U.S. has more youth soccer players than any of the countries that are real contenders to win the World Cup, and with 24.5 million players trails only China, which didn’t qualify for the 2014 World Cup, in getting kids to play.

2nd most popular but yet we still are so far behind! Youth sports in general in our country are becoming more about paying your way through the systems. once we get rid of the cost to play these sports, then maybe we would be able to compete. Basketball is popular because a kid doesn't have to play on these travel teams to be looked at. Club dues and travel expenses are just crazy! I am sorry but we are just padding the pockets of US soccer and other people who really don't care about development of the best players...only the ones who are going to keep feeding money into a broken system.

I agree with the expense issue. Club soccer is just too expensive and burdensome for many families. But our women's team competes just fine. So it seems like the reason has to be that the best male athletes are attracted to the sports in the US where the bigger money and fame are. Look at college football and basketball vs. college soccer in terms of a fan base. Look at the salaries of those who make it professionally. I really think it comes down to that. Women don't have those football, baseball, hockey, basketball options to make money. It's just tennis golf and soccer for women, right? And soccer not so great for them. The best US male athletes aren't incentivized to go with soccer in terms of future potential.

Best athletes???? At the 2014 World Cup, the US was among the fittest and most athletic teams at the tournament....they got beat by a better team , not out ran by Belgium when we lost to them...Look at Pulisic, you think he is one of the most gifted athletes? don't think so but we all know he has one of most talented soccer minds in US soccer

NFL has a free minor league system College football
NBA has free minor league system College football
MLB has a well developed minor league system
Soccer does not have a developed minor league system after U19

There is more money in soccer than any of the other sports. The issue is in the USA is who controls the players and the inability to get paid for developing players. Even when FIFA says a club is due $$$$ USA soccer sues for them not to get it.

They system is fundamentally flawed. When JK got here, he said the problem with US soccer is it is a pay for play system at all levels. You can blame it on greed, US laws, MLS or US Soccer but until fundamental changes take place nothing will change. I do not see a bunch of DOC's giving up their 100k plus part-time paychecks anytime soon.

                  All very good points.

I'm tired of hearing that our best athletes don't play soccer. It could be a valid argument if we weren't as athletic or as well conditioned as the teams we play against but that is far far from the truth.

In actuality we have one of the most athletic mens national soccer teams in the world. That isn't our problem.

Most countries don't care about womens soccer...in addition, the USMNT lacks in diversity-due to pay to play system..US soccer needs a Allen Iverson caliber of a athlete…there needs to be a culture change too…but parents unfamiliar with a sport wont pay obscene amout of money.

The NCAA doesn't have college soccer? That's news to me.

You can say what you want about college soccer is bad for development and the various reasons it hurts players, but has college football not become basically about spread offense and high points scoring? How many colleges run a pro style system these days, NCAA basketball is straight athleticism now a days. After U19 players have the option to play NCAA, NPSL, PDL.

US Soccer not rewarding teams who develop professionals is a problem, because that money could be spent on helping coaches get the higher licenses without going broke to do so as well in to further development of the next generation at those clubs, and the DOC's could still keep their $$. And I get the whole child labor laws, but we have amended almost every law already, why not this one

Like baseball, soccer is not a viable free minor league system like football or basketball

You can not even scholarship a full starting lineup for either sport.

You can not get paid for development which is a US Soccer and US anti-slavery law issue.

                            This is a problem

                            MLB: $490,000 [1]
                            MLS: $35,125 [6]
                            NBA: $490,180 (rookies) up to $1,399,507 (10+ years) [2]
                            NFL: $405,000 (rookies) up to $940,000 (10+ years) [3]
                            NHL: $525,000 [4]

$35,000 is just above poverty level. The best athletes make better money in other sports

Wow, what pay stats. I think that answers the question. It's all about a lack of fan base which equals lack of pay. Too many other big sports in US. Soccer def getting more popular in US so when all of our kids who love soccer are paying for pro sport tickets, things might start to change.
