LA Galaxy launch first Girls' Academy program fully-funded by an MLS side

    http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/1...unded-mls-side

The LA Galaxy announced on Tuesday that they have launched three Girls' teams ahead of the inaugural US Soccer Girls' Development Academy season, and that they will be the first and only Girls' Academy teams to be fully-funded by an MLS side.

The U-14/15, U-16/17 and U-18/19 sides will help kick off the 2017-18 season, which will begin in fall 2017. Because they are fully-funded, local athletes can join free of charge. Each team will consist of 23 players from within a 75-mile radius of StubHub Center, where they will play and train alongside the Galaxy's other academy and professional teams.

“The LA Galaxy want to continue to invest in and lead the development of youth soccer in North America in every facet,” said LA Galaxy president Chris Klein in a statement provided by the team. “Adding an Academy program for girls is a huge step for this club in order to continue that investment. We are thrilled to launch this program and provide a structure for young girls to grow and develop in a professional environment free of charge.”

Three other MLS clubs will be fielding girls' teams in the inaugural USSDA season: FC Dallas, the San Jose Earthquakes and future MLS expansion team LAFC. Nine out of ten National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) clubs, including the MLS-affiliated Houston Dash, Orlando Pride and Portland Thorns, will also be fielding teams in the 74-team, six-conference league.

Pro club affiliation is not the same thing as fully funded/free-to-play. Bravo to LA Galaxy for setting the bar. Unfortunately it's unlikely many others will be able to match it

Isn't Boston Breakers also ECNL? My question is how Breakers, Stars, and these clubs that have both designations handle that. I think there might be some creative jockeying going on.

Not if they're the only one doing it, which they will be for the foreseeable future.

Great, 3% will be able to play pro ball and make 20 grand a year. This is all folly. Get them a good education.

lol. Can you imagine the Revs doing it?! LMAO. Very few MLS clubs will be willing to participate let alone offer it for free.

Kraft is way too cheap to do that

Not many clubs will be able to match it, especially if they also have boys DA. They need to have deep pockets with a lot of profitable teams to cover the costs. And what incentive do MLS teams have to offer free girls tuition? At least on the boys's side there's the premise they can develop home grown talent. For girls the incentive is to get into a good school and have some of it paid for. Even if it expanded they're setting up a have and have not system like on the boys side - a growing disparity between the free to play MLS clubs and much of the rest
