Probably more useful than the fiction going on in the other thread about the specialness of being a competitive rec coach though somehow I think that rec coach might just be a closet helicopter parent.
"Pro academic crowd"? LOL! Still mad about the "fifth-tier" jab?
What you fail to realize is that academically high-achieving families often care about academic rankings and reputation largely as an indicator of quality of school/students. Just like good, ambitious athletes like to play with better players, for more accomplished coaches, and against strong competition, serious students respond to an academically challenging environment, which requires similarly committed and capable peers. This can go well beyond material ROI--just like some people want to become Olympians though they won't make much money (might even lose, given opportunity costs) or be on tv. Hard for the anti-academic crowd to believe, but true.

Exactly. BTNT would have the thousands and thousands who work hard to go to good schools all believe they have made horrific choices. What a dope. And can't see that he is the helicopter parent par excellence.

Most "competitive" rec coaches are helicopter parents. That's why they coach!

No they coach travel - at least in our town. Rec is for the ulittle parents that actually enjoy it and are happy to help out. Travel is filled with copters and it gets noisy. No wonder so many have left the program for clubs where parents have a harder time hovering

Happened in our town, too. Those parents still try to assert themselves at club, and some are open to it. Don't kid yourself.

They do, but at the better clubs they fail - usually because their kids aren't that good so clubs really won't put up with it. That's why the helicopter. The above poster is on to something - helicoptering parents are often very insecure. They're afraid their kids will fail at something, and that it may be a reflection of themselves.
