    MA ODP: No more average!

    Fall 2016. another ODP tryouts.

    http://www.mayouthsoccer.org/programs/tryouts/

I love this: "Evaluations in each small sided game will be made on a 4-point scale.

    Scale: 4=Excels, 3=Above Average, 2=Below Average, 1=Deficient"

As I understand, all the average players will be dismissed from the field without evaluation.
    Sucks to be average.

Yes. But considering it only attracts below average players, all is well. Hope they have enough players to field a team.

By not giving evaluator "avg" option he is forced to take a position: up or down, no fence sitting. Actually makes a lot of sense.

It's all relative right? It's all compared to whoever is on the field at tryouts, not vs the state or national average. Too funny

That is true - a 5 point scale gives an evaluator an easy middle ground. Doesn't change the fact that ODP has become a shell of its former self and no longer attracts the quality of talent it used to.

The whole system is watered down.

As I read it this system has zero to do with ODP evaluations. It is set up for town programs that wish to utilize mysa to come in and evaluate kids at tryouts. Not sure why you are looking to use this against ODP.

I actually like this line better: "Technically proficient players who cannot perform in traffic or when under pressure should not be placed on top teams. In contrast, some players whose technical skills may not be as advanced as others, but whose athletic skills and understanding of the game is advanced, should be challenged in an optimal environment to develop technical skills and to help the team."

Sums up soccer in the US - let's do our best to challenge those athletically gifted kids and give them opportunities to develop technical skills by placing them with the best players. Those technically gifted kids who are a little less physically developed, let's not give them opportunities to learn how to be quicker and smarter to beat more athletic kids, and instead place them on lower teams until they finally hit puberty at 16/17. I'm sure their development won't suffer one bit.

I don't know that I agree with your interpretation. A "technical" player needs to be athletic enough (or so incredibly technical) that he/she can perform in traffic and under pressure. If the kid can't play in tight spaces, then he/she is either not technical enough or incredibly weak as an athlete (way too small, slow, or weak). The kid is not good enough to overcome the athletic deficiency and be competitive. Just because a player's greatest attribute is his/her technical ability doesn't mean that they have to automatically reserve a spot on the team for him.

Also - Note that they are NOT saying "we'll do sprints and some 3 cone drills and the top finishers will be on the team." They know that athletic ability alone is insufficient.

Technique ≠ Skill - skill requires speed of thought and speed of movement under pressure (e.g.dribbling out of traffic)

Athleticism does not always mean taller, bigger and stronger.

If a player is not as strong as peers athletically, but is able to compete in game situations due to their technical or tactical ability then of course they should be given a chance. Especially at town level and younger ages as the webpage refers to.

Players who lack the agility, balance, co-ordination, endurance or speed to compete with more athletic peers will be better served playing in teams or programs where they are able to compete. Placing these players on teams and in programs beyond their ability can hinder their development.

All the best players are playing for the Bolts Academy who have a similar scale for ranking players.
