Because, in spite of all the whining about the bad economy, the middle-class and upper-middle class have enough discretionary income to spend on their kids. They also like to see their kids doing something besides hanging out playing video games and smoking weed. If the kids and the parents are happy, who cares.

That said, the downside to this model is that there is probably considerable talent that is not getting a shot at high-level soccer, because their families cannot afford the freight.

tbey don't have too and most players cannot. Most players are not playing in high end environments. But they still play and should be encouraged, not denigrated. Really great game.

        1) You don't have to pay - it is a choice , there are options

        2) Top players don't pay

        3) Every sport operates this way so good luck taking capitalism out of youth sports. The money train has left the station

        4) US parents would never adopt a system where a club essentially owns their kid and at a certain age education goes out to the window to pursue a "possible" pro path

        5) far more discretionary income in the US and youth sports is one way parents chose to spend their money

        6) pro soccer is miniscule in the US compared to other countries; no local clubs in smaller markets sponsoring programs. It's big cities and that's it

          Bernie Sanders go away.
99% of the kids in northeast are not national team or even D1 candidates so figure out what you are paying for and stop complaining.

            1) child labor laws
            2) free agency laws
            3) protective parents that aren't willing to give their kids away for a chance out of abject poverty

Usa parents so misguided about the importance and value of youth sports. Youth sports Industry preys on insecurities as do many other products and brands.

                1) no transfer payments to developing clubs
                2) NCAA/no minor league professional soccer
                3) too many parents insist promising prospects attend school

agree with this, but most parents who have promising aspects to go pro are not able to get in the game because top places target suburban wealthies by definition.

                  - clubs are rewarded (financially only) by the numbers of kids they have and not the quality of the kids they produce.

                    US soccer is ... recreational.

Some clubs are getting recognition [Red bulls post and credit their 11 "feeder" clubs] which give those clubs a slight incentive, but each club still needs to make enough money to pay for their pitch, the lights, refs, management/office and the coaches. Until clubs are rewarded for creating quality (to go pro) vs quantity and college playing, US soccer is ... recreational.

Then who are all these very wealthy European and African kids at my kids summer soccer camps? (Us and Europe) I think you are misinformed and not broadly educated on the international pay play spectrum. The US has a greater number of people play to pay, but it's a bigger country. There are other sports in the US that are used by disadvantaged kids to get out of poverty that just don't have the same appeal like soccer does in Latin America eurpoe and Africa- ex Football and basketball. You are to narrow focused and your broad statement is false.

Yes, that is called town soccer here. You can get a scholarship and not pay and the coaches don't get paid. They are successful in developing out of this like football and basketball is here. Then there are people who pay to play like the international kids at camps etc. it's the mid-level out of this country you don't hear much about here but you see it in pockets.

No. The coaches in England get paid - they get paid by the clubs who get paid when the clubs sell the players.

Can't happen here because it is illegal for kids to be tied to clubs in a way that clubs can profit.

Guy what you are refusing to do is understand and see there is a pay to play system outside of England's clubs/academy's. Of course it isn't the same here as it is in England. The poster is pointing out that soccer here isn't soccer there. Clubs here can't make money in soccer like Europe. American consumers really don't like it to the point they can make money off it. Their rise of the ranks soccer is more like our football and basketball.
If you want free soccer go to your town.
