Football is Foreign to American Values

Happy Thanksgiving. Interesting article in USA Today:

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...game/76261064/

    From the article:
"Football is America’s game. But it’s hard not to conclude that many of the attributes that make America great — individualism, enterprise and resistance to rules and authority — are better exemplified by soccer."

I have to say between all the commercials, play stoppages, etc., tackle football is almost unwatchable unless you have a GAMBLING interest. This is where the sport is headed.

Agreed. Its very coach-driven. And stats driven. So its easy to gamble against.
There are many different ways to plug in Fantasy stats, projections, etc.

Yes its true. But its really big in other countries as well. Many European soccer teams are even sponsored by betting sites.

The difference is that American football allows you to keep Fantasty stats and adds a more complex level of betting. Where soccer has fantasy, its not nearly as complex as Football.

Have to agree. I grew up playing American football in HS and small college and love the game. Then I stumbled into soccer watching my daughter play. Now I really enjoy watching all levels of soccer (men and women) and for me a really well played, competitive soccer game is a whole lot more enjoyable than a competitive American football game. I saw this study that compared the two sports:

              Football
Clock Duration: 3hrs,10 mins; Actual Playing Time: 11 mins; # of commercials/hour: 47
              Soccer
Clock Duration: 1hr,55 mins; Actual Playing Time: 55 mins; # of commercials/hour: 20

So if you sat through a 3-hour long American football game you had to suffer through about 161 commercials!!!!

Most Americans will never get it.
