    The Difference One Kid Makes

I begrudgingly acknowledge that our team is average without the presence of, maybe, 6 players. With just one of these players missing, the team completely falls apart.

The coach knows this, of course, and probably can't wait for tryouts to replace the weakest of the rest.

The question is, where will these players come from? Despite the density of Eastern Mass, there seems to be a low number of solid players regardless of age group or gender. Is soccer really that difficult? (I played basically everything but)

Why are you posting this? What's your point?

Great question actually. There are lots of teams out there that are basically 1 trick ponies. What happens if that one trick pony leaves? How does a team get better it they stay?

This is pretty much all of the top u12 and below teams. A great soccer team is made of one or two great players and the rest are good enough players (otherwise in-fighting starts).

If the top player leaves, then the coach has to go looking for a replacement.

What used to happen is the 35-40 U12 teams would be cut down to 24 and that would force talent onto the better teams. Now you 70+ U12 teams and there is nothing pushing players in any one direction other than marketing hype.

Thank god my kid is that "kid." Not having to tryout makes life easier and is a great confidence builder.

There does seem to be more of an abundance of good football players and hockey players and baseball players and everything but soccer. Or maybe it's because the soccer players are playing at clubs and the other sports are just through your town so relatively it's difficult to assess those other sports players as a pool. It seems that lacrosse is also going towards the club way.

Give it a rest, BTNT. The vast majority of the better players, at least on the girls' side, find their way soon enough to Breakers, GPS, NEFC, SSS, or Stars. Maybe you're a bit out of date already, since this usually happens by U12. By then, most of the difference-making action consists of movement between these five clubs.

Oh, no, it's the nutjob, run away. Next thing he'll be doing is explaining how destination teams like the NEFC U15's get created now.

Our team has three tiers. The first tier is the difference makers, of course. The second tier are the players that basically support the first-tier. They are solid but interchangeable and not necessarily missed at a game. The third tier consists of players that should never have made the team in the first place. Those are the players that everybody hopes stays home sick with a runny nose.
It is obvious that the better teams in Massachusetts have a higher density of the tier one players. But no team ever seems to have a enough to compete nationally at all age groups (unless we are talking about the NEFC U15 girls).

Too many clubs spreading the talent thin. It's that simple. There are parents who would like their kid to play on the "top" team but can't either because of distance or logistics. So they'll go with a good option that works for them. If that "good" option wasn't available then they'd really have to chose. If the Revs were the only DAP option between Boston and NY what might the team look like?

I thought this thread was going to be about how awesome NEFC U15Gis with the portsmouth phenom and how they can't even beat Bayside without her!

I am not usually a BTNT supporter. Not sure if the post was actually his. But, there is is some accuracy in that comment if you go back in time.

Nice try, BTNT. Please, start another "I'm new to the area" thread.
