You might be thinking of the MLS Combine - second week of January IIRC - my understanding is it's by invitation, college coaches can get you one, or teams directly. There is a private (paytotryout) combine the week before, scouted by some MLS teams as well as NASL and USLPro sides, so that's another path that can get you an invite. And teams do have trialists in for training, along with some Academy guys (current players and alumni) they are working with...
