    College recruiting questions

    1) Are coaches able to recognize good players playing on mediocre HS teams?

    2) Does playing certain positions get more of a look than others.

    3) In the same vein as question 2, is it better to be a solid all-around player.

    1) Scouting at his games is virtually non existent.
    2) no
    3) as opposed to what? Coaches are looking for skilled players with athletic abilities that match their level.

#1 - Incorrect. College coaches will definitely go to high school games to see players they are interested in. Check it out for yourself. Next Sunday a number of prep schools will be holding a showcase event up at Lancaster. Last year there 25-30 local college coaches in attendance.

#2 - Correct. Everyone on a soccer field has their particular role to fulfill and any college coach worth their salt knows how to evaluate how well individual players do that.

#3 - Correct. Most coaches can walk up to a field and just watch how well a player runs and decide whether they are interested in watching more. When a player plays on a team that is weak they need to stand out by doing the things that are expected of their role exceptionally well. Like making the right runs even if their teammates aren't good enough to take advantage of them. Coaches see those types of things.

Assuming these questions are sincere, let's hope your kid is not yet high school age.

        1) Few college coaches/scouts attend HS games--unless already very interested in a player. Recruiting mainly takes place through high-level club soccer and college camps. So the question is largely moot.

        2) Attacking/scoring (field) players are the most highly coveted. That said, difference makers (e.g., shut-down defender)--against quality competition--are always in demand.

        3) Coaches/scouts prefer difference makers--regardless of how many positions they can play--not solid generalists.

Notice I said VIRTUALLY non existent. College coaches spend very little time watching kids at HS games. The level of play is (usually) low, the competition is (usually) weak, the timing is bad - it is college season after all. Are there exceptions, sure, but very little scouting is done there.

Add to point #1 - they'll come by if it's local and convenient. Otherwise they'll shop premier and DAP players at showcases where they get more bang for their travel and recruiting dollars

All I can say is there have always been college coaches at my kid's games. Not everyone one but they do come periodically. Guess you have been associated with high school programs that just don't have any players college coaches are looking for.

                Correct. Like at most HSs.

College coaches do go to playoffs.

Most look at film so they do not waste time traveling.

No wonder saps like you spend fortunes on club soccer. You haven't a clue how things work. 99% of college bound soccer players still play high school soccer. If a coach is interested in a player they will come to watch them play in a high school game if they need to see them play.

Go away with your silly agendas and insults, BTDT. No one is disagreeing that college coaches will go to HS games to watch players they're already interested in. The OP clearly was wondering whether college coaches are generally attending HS games looking for talent they're not already familiar with.

STFU. The OP was clearly setting up to knock high school soccer and it is pretty clear that they want people to think that showcases are the only place college coaches recruit.

This is the OP and I was not trying to set anything up. I was asking a damn question. This board is overrun with paranoid a--holes.

It's just BTDT. He can't imagine that anyone might ask an innocent, if naive, question--since he assumes that everyone operates in the dishonest, agenda-based way that he does. Hopefully, the serious answers you did get helped.

If you want college recruiting advice without all of this BTDT/Perspective crap go to the college forum on the Back of the Net site. The posts are screened so you are more likely to get a legitimate response.
