We are trying to decide if we should do futsal or not? We clearly have seen the benefit in playing in the past. We have been told it could be detrimental after the age of 12 to play because it might teach bad habits. Any thoughts?

Futsal does not translate well onto the outside game. There have been just incredible futsal players in Brazil who have never made it onto a conventional soccer squad. Not to mention great free stylers and street players who have never made it either. Young kids can try it and it lends itself to quick decision making and developing foot skills and such but beyond age 11/12, I wouldn't do it. Just a very, very different sport.

Futsal is a different sport. Treat it as such and you won't have to worry about bad habits.
It's like saying, if you play basketball you'll develop bad soccer habits.

Yeah they shouldn't play small sided games either. Anything that might encourage quick decisions and accurate passing should be discouraged. From 11yo on they should just be running full field and fetching long balls.

Definitely a different sport... but that doesn't mean it will teach you bad habits.
That's like saying street inline hockey is detrimental to playing ice hockey. Or ping pong hurts your ability to play tennis. Or how about boarded indoor soccer, which is as far from "soccer" as you can get and still call it soccer.
Being coached to try to beat everybody off the dribble every time is a bad habit. Being coached to one-touch pass everything every time is a bad habit. Being encouraged to only use your strong leg is a bad habit.
Playing futsal - learning to control the ball with all areas of your foot, and being forced to make quick decisions - does not develop bad habits.

Futsal is great for foot skills and quick decision making. Is it a different game? Absolutely! Is every outdoor soccer player a great futsal player? NO! And every great futsal player isn't necessarily a great outdoor player because different skills are required. I've heard parents from my D's team say that our girls play much smaller after playing futsal and it takes them a couple games to adjust to the bigger space. I think it has helped my D develop into a stronger outdoor player and she really loves it!
