Well - lousy first game for US. Bad play all around. Germany flat out outplayed the US in many aspects. The technical ability of the US was sorely lacking IMO. Hopefully they can rebound.

Agree. But what gets me is the time and money put into "elite" youth soccer in this country and we see little improvement in the game. I've watched for two decades now and what I saw from the US team are the same old, same old. I could be watching my daughters' college teams. It just blows my mind, because these women are suppose to be the best of the best. At least my daughters' teams have the excuse that they aren't the best of the best. I guess I won't be so quick to criticize their teams this fall.

US women's soccer WAS ahead of the curve but now the rest of the world is catching up. Germany's decade long effort to improve the country's soccer is now paying off. Look for Japan to also do well. The US better change or they will always be middle-of-the-road internationally like the men's

Totally agree. What happened to teaching the basics? I thought we would see a marked improvement given all the "elite" leagues that have sprouted up.

No, I disagree there. They will always be one of the top teams in the world, but they get the job done through athleticism. However, when they meet a team with equal athleticism like Germany they are going to lose because a team like Germany will be better technically and tactically. The US has improved in that respect, but not to the extent one might assume considering the time and money spent. That's because the investment is all wrong. We're chasing all over the country to play teams that are suppose to make our players better, but it's not.

The US women have always had the HUGE advantage that Title IX gave them. That advantage is now over.
I was expecting more, hopefully tonight they turn it around
Is it me or is our GK chunky? She needs to be better
I don't expect much from Brazil. Their federation couldn't care less about their woman's soccer program. Even their men's program isn't what it use to be.

What would you rather have, the turkey shoot it USED to be or a truly competitive situation? Back in the day the women's world soccer scene was hardly even because half the countries didn't even put any effort into their women. In some respects it was almost embarrassing to win as much as they did.
In a truly competitive situation, no one is going to win it all year in and year out or even stay around in the top 5. Just look at how things change on the men's side.
The gratifying thing is when qualified people put their minds to things it always improves situations. What you need to focus on is that the women's game is really improving. The women themselves are better athletes than they used to be and they are actually playing a much better brand of soccer than they used to.
The biggest problem the US has now is they defend like crap. They just can't seem to battle out to 0-0 draw against a tough opponent. The problem is they tend to want to get everyone involved in moving up so they can play possession attacking soccer but then don't transition and defend against it well when the other team counters. Over the past couple of cycles they have been moving forwards back to defense to improve the foot skills and add an attacking mentality but they have really lost the ability to defend 1v1 or the finesse to close down spaces with positioning.

Defense isn't their problem as much as the Midfield is. US was constantly giving up possession in the midfield which then put the US defense in unnecessary pressure. It would be one thing if the Germans were taking the ball, but it was really dumb errors when an American was not under pressure that killed them and if i'm not mistaken led to both German goals.
