    Confusion on Men's College Soccer

There is NAIA, Division 3, Division 2, and Division 1. You would think that they each level is a step up in talent. But when you look at the rosters many of the D2 and below schools have a number of foreign kids on the roster. Also if you look at scores when these FL teams play head to head they are all very close. My two questions:

    1. Is it progressively harder to make each level's roster?
    2. Why are there so many foreign kids and how good are they?

The answer to q1 is yes, and the answer to q2 is they don't have any more foreign players than D1.

Some D2 schools have 90% foreign where some D1 have 90% US.

And vice versa. Although some D2 coaches will tell you that the D1 schools get the majority of the top attacking players so they have to go abroad to get talent. The talent they are getting overseas is usually 2nd or 3rd tier as the top players in Europe, Africa, and S Amer go pro. So, the talent level they are getting is still usually a step down. Having said all that there are no absolutes and there are D2 teams that can play with and beat some D1 schools, but the top half of D1 is better than the top of the D2 ranks.

yes they recruit overseas and use your tax dollars to pay for it. Get a player on a team fo a sport that is a financial drain for the school. So you play for it twice. 9 scholarships for mens soccer you do the math

There's an assumption that DI is "better" than DII, but it's not always true. There's quite a few DII schools that would beat the snot out of the lower 50% of DIs

In general D1 is better than D2 and so forth but there are exceptions. There are some D1 programs in Florida that are simply bad like FAU, UNF that would lose to DII Lynn, Rollins, and St Leo right now. Then there are DII schools like Eckerd that should be DIII as they are horrible and Nova is pretty bad too.

There are several reasons why there are foreigners on teams. Sometimes there is this misconception that foreign is better sort of like how everyone automatically assumes that Toyotas are better than Fords despite all of Toyota’s recalls so there is this bias in favor of foreign players.

Having nothing to do woth soccer, USF may have scholarship money available for Carribian students. However, if that scholarship money is awarded to male applicants who happen to be talented soccer players, it does not count against the 9.9 athletic scholarships the NCAA allows Division I universities to award to their male soccer players..

So why are these schools bringing in so many foreign kids, especially if they are 3rd tier. Is it because a third tier foreign kid is still better than an American top tier or is there some financial advantage?

And the top tier US talent is going to D1.

I'd take a D2 Rollins education over a D1 USF or UNF any day of the week, and I think most people would agree. I think people get too hung up on D1/D2/D3 and lose sight of the bigger picture.

I had a discussion with a coach once and he was of the opinion that there's a big overlap in quality among the top D2 and bottom D1's, with probably D1 being a bit better funded and more 'intense" than the typical D2

I was told Lynn won Div2 without a single USA player starting . Also the average starters age was 23 .

                              What is the advantage?
