    USA League, Pinellas County

Most soccer families I know are pessimists. And it's a fact that here in Pinellas, CDL Fever still exists. Much more than the nearby counties. I guess one reason is that all USA clubs here are small, with problems forming teams. Unlike neighboring Tampa which have USA clubs with more than 3 teams per age groups and giving CDL clubs a run for their money. And that's just about it. A group of 60 kids will always end up with a better team than those who has only 7 kids show up on "tryouts". And that makes the assumption of a better league and competition.

The USA League has many advantages than most people give credit. It's just the inferiority complex of clubs,DOC's that hinders that. Look, we know playing for the USA is at least 50% cheaper than the CDL season. But most parents are willing to spend as much anyways. And one loophole/rule of the league for the young U9/10 is not known to most parents. It's that you can play kids (no limit) into two teams, and the cost for a season is just more than $100! That means that all you have to do is register two teams, pay, and your kids will have the benefit of two games per week! And with the geography of clubs in Pinellas, it is a breeze driving from one club to another. No more issues about playing time or lack of games.

2nd, tournaments. The season ends in February for a reason; unlimited tourney play. But most parents already gave up even before the season ends. The clubs must orient parents that the short season is just a part of a bigger picture, which is tourn.till May. That should be the agenda. Spring soccer is for rec.kids. And clubs should give up this nonsense for their club players. This is one turn off for most parents.

Remember that the formula to have a successful club is keeping parents happy. Sounds demeaning, but we all know that's true. I am merely stating the bright side of the USA league. And I do blame the clubs here for their present size and situation. Their DOC's have nothing to blame but themselves. I don't suggest parent coaches, but there should be more roles than just driving your kids and yell at the sidelines. I believe that kids will get better faster if they play more games. The game itself will teach them more than any genius of coaches. We don't expect our kids to play futbol in the streets and everywhere like they do in most parts of the world. But we can have them play competitively on the field. But they need more. The short season is a joke if you just take it the way it is...

    1. What Tampa area clubs have three teams in each age group of the USA League? Tampa Rangers, nope, Tampa Swag, nope, Greater Tampa, nope, so which club has all these teams.

    2. The USA League is bashed rightfully so, because if you go to a USA League game, especially at the Senior Level, the fundamental skills are non-existent. You literally watch two teams taking turns kicking the ball up the field and praying that one of their teammates beats the defender. You will never see more than two passes connected in a run.

    3. Your right, the USA League is comprised of mainly small clubs that for the most part play at a level that is slightly above rec. The bigger clubs pulled out of the USA League because of the lack of competition in the Tampa area. Do you really think that the Chargers, WFF, TBU, or Strictly pulled out because of relegation, come on, only two teams get relegated per year and those two teams are usually GYSA level teams.

    4. Why do clubs in Pinellas such as PCU, Largo and Celtic clamor to be added to other leagues, it's because they know that the USA League is weak. If any of these clubs were asked to join the CDL they would leave the USA League in a New York Minute.

    5. The USA League is poorly managed, have you ever been to one of their monthly meetings, it's ridiculous how weak the leadership is in the USA League. They struggle to get quality people into positions of Director of Boys Competitive or Girls, these positions are always open and filled at the last minute.

    6. While I do like the relegation idea, it generally is a mute point in the USA League, since the two teams that are relegated usually either fold, or get put right back into the same division because of lack of teams willing to move up.

    7. Would I like to see a local soccer league filled with all of the teams in the Tampa area that had a true relegation and offered competitive games for the bigger clubs, sure who wouldn't. Is it possible, probably not, alot of smaller clubs would need to merge in order to be competitive with the bigger clubs, but due to the greed factor this is probably not likely. Look at the St. Pete area, if we toss Largo in there too, is there really a need for 6 clubs in that area? Especially when only Strictly is semi-decent, but the rest of the clubs are horrible. Why not pare down to two clubs in that area, then you would have two viable teams. The same can be said of Pasco, why is there four weak clubs in that area, why not merge all four and have one good club? In Tampa, why not merge Rangers and Swag along with any other small club in their areas.

    8. I am willing to pay the higher cost for my child to have the ability to play against the best teams in the state, as my club has access to multiple leagues. If I went to one of the smaller clubs in Pinellas then my child would be stuck playing in only the USA League.

If your child has a chance to play in a league outside of the USA League then you need to take the opportunity.

This is the same argument every time. No solution.

USA,FSL,CDL,NPL are all the same 2 or 3 good teams and the rest are just above rec. Unless your team can get into a league you have to qualify for. That is what you get.

Btw Promotion and Relegation was a major reason why the big clubs pulled out. They did not like the fact that a small club with a good team in one age group could knock them out.

Does not help retention when the small less expensive club a few miles down the road has a better team in your age group.

I have been to USA clubs and CDL clubs in St Pete/Largo/Clearwater and actually they are about the same price wise. The USA clubs have monthly training fees and high uniform fees that drive up the price. But even if it were more, I would pay it. I compare it like this, CDL is like taking your kid to private school and USA is like taking your kid to Gibbs.

Not all of them have training fees. Or any other monthly fee. Don't try to inform if you aren't informed yourself.

You see those Teams in CDL losing all their games? Maybe they go home at night and dream of playing in USA league. Don't kid yourself in thinking development is going on by losing like that. Clearly it is not.

Go read the USA League bylaws before misstating things. The by laws state that two teams are delegated and promoted from each age group. There is not one single age group that any team from the CDL would finish in the bottom 2 of D1. This was never a reason larger clubs pulled out, they pulled out because of how weak the USA League is from top to bottom. You have teams that are D1 in the USA League that are ranked 100th in the state for their age group. Parents are paying good money at WFF, TBU and the Chargers to paly against the best teams in the state, if they were in the USA League they would be forced to play bad teams such as Citrus United, PCU, Hernando Heat, Largo, Celtic, Dunedin etc. which in turn hardly develops their skills playing inferior opponents

Your half right, the USA League is excellent up to the Senior age groups then it becomes horrible.

Even bough there are USA teams ranked ahead of CDL teams? Lol. That DOC sure has you wrapped around the checkbook, huh? If CDL Club training is so much better, how do D2 USA teams out rank the majority of CDL teams in ANY age group? Not logical of CDL teams are superior.

Before you ask... Do your own homework.

U15 girls Strictly was the worst team in the CDL, they went to Region C D1 and went undefeated. The only people that think the USA League is a good league, are parents that have kids playing in it and just don't know know any better, or DOC's that need to sell their club to prospective parents.

do your homework. That Strictly team was knocked out in quarter finals, only playing 3 games in all of Region C. couldnt hang in either CDL or USA. whatever

Every Tampa area club would ditch the USA League if their club was given an opportunity to join the CDL.

keep smoking that crack pipe. CDL is irrelevant, scheduled scrimmages at best.
