A young WPFC super star strips off her jersey as she puts home the game winning PK during the Semi-Finals!...

    Dragon's Newletter! Vol #1 No. #6

    COVER STORY & LATEST HEADLINES:

"Uberteam's big sister win gold at Rimland!"

After being bridesmaids this year for several tournaments; Runner's up at Rainier Challenge and Snohomish, and a forgotten performance at the US Club Regionals, the Johnny Cash gals have finally gotten it done! Coach Fish has pulled the team together and they fought their way to win their first tournament of the year! First they beat Celtic 3-0, and then followed that up with a victory over the Steve Miller gals 2-1. After a tie 0-0 to the suprising Whatcom Rangers team they made it to the semi's to face a hungry Dosveedanya squad. After a hard fought game it ended in a 0-0 tie. Going to PK's both squads were determined to make it to the finals. With the Game winning PK on the line #19 for girls in black stepped up and buried it the corner! Now it was up to the Goalie #1 to stop the last shot of Dos, which she did! On to the finals against Big Red! (see their story below). After an hour long battle with both teams giving it everything they had it was 1-1 late in the game, when out of nowhere a little superstar #9 steps up and blasts the Game Winner in the net for the Johnny Cash gals!!! WPFC 2 NWN Red 1. Congrats to the whole team and a special Dragon shout out to the following superstars:

#19 for her game winning PK in the semi's!

And of course congrats to the whole darn Defense who were very stingy this weekend! Its as if a magic fairy blessed the team this weekend!

    "Team spotlight!"

    http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/5449/dscf0337hb9.jpg

The BIG RED MACHINE was written off by many at the beginning of the year with their loss of 7 players!! Well if recent results are any indicator, you can stop your fretting over everyones favorite Big Red! After a shakey start, the Russian Stud has got these gals whooped into shape and they are now contenders fo sho! A great showing in the Slammers cup in California, and a runner up showing at Rimland has shown the soccer world they are back! Their new goalie has been great in the box and they have players stepping up to the plate like never before! Great job to the whole team!

"Are they Oranges on Fire? Or just being burned out?"

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniont...ges/orange.jpg

The Tangerine gals, "once on fire" winning several tournaments in a row, and showing well in the mighty Surf cup, now seem more like they are "burned out"...As written here on WPS, this is there 3rd major tournament in 4 weeks! And according to their website they have almost played 40 games already! 40 games! Heck, that is as many as some teams play all year. So hats off to ya gals, but is there ever a thing as "too much soccer"? Good luck to yer whole team, hope you have some time off to put those "orange slices" on ice

    "Another STATE CUP?"

US Club soccer (rumored) is planning on holding a state cup sometime here in November! Also rumored are some big clubs already getting involved! Anyone have any info on this late breaking story, please PM Dragon with the full details!!!

OTHER NEWS AND GOSSIP AND TIDBITS:

    "COACHS CORNER!"

This weeks topic for the coach is "Flat back vs Diamond Back"

This is something I hear talked about a lot especially at the younger ages. Parents grow up with their kids using the diamond back which uses two outside backs a stopper and sweeper. Generally the coach will put the most athletic, and fast defender as the sweeper. Then they will put the best ball winner as stopper. I will be the first to say I have won many games like this early on in my coaching career. However, as I looked to coach more competitive teams I learned the ONLY way to go is with a flat back.
First of all it isn’t truly a flat back. If your defenders are ever in a straight line across the back then they are doing it incorrectly. The point of the flat back is not to use one on one marking rather for the defense to be able to move and adjust depending on where the ball is and how much danger is coming at them.
When the ball is on the left side the left defender should be pressing very aggressively to help push numbers up and stop the attack on the opponents side. While they push up each of the other defender starts to drop in support and close the gaps. Typically if the outside left defender was pushed up then the right defender would be in support, but all the way over to about the middle of the field leaving the far side wide open. The reason being they are still in position to give support and also in position to cut off a diagonal ball that could be attempted over the top.
Now if your asking why this is so important when it comes to competitive soccer its pretty easy. By using this sort of non marking defense you allow your defenders (any one of them) to join the attack and add another attacker. This is something EVERY college and professional team uses. A really hard lesson for the defenders to learn is if you are making a run up the side line with the ball when you play it DON’T stop your run. Instead keep going and finish it.
As you can tell this is a much more difficult way of defending for younger kids. It’s much easier as a coach to say “mark that player and don’t let them get awayâ€￾. But at u11 or u12 if you have a coach trying to teach the zonal marking of flat back be aware the team WILL struggle for a while with it. But don’t worry your child will be SO much better off for learning this. Not only is it a better type of defense but it will also teach them how to read the game and how to join the attack from anywhere on the field. These are all things kids learn way to late. So next time your team is struggling at u11 because the defense is having a hard time adjusting, go up and shake your coaches hand and thank him for teaching them something that will have them far ahead of other kids at u13 and u14.

Thanks Coach, We enjoy your articles every week! Thanks for being there for us

*Sadly there is no "view from behind the whistle this week*

But now another new section!!!!!
