Dragon News Vol #1 Post #5

    [quote=Dragon]Dragon's Newletter! Vol #1 No. #5

    LATEST HEADLINES:

    "Standings Plus going bye bye"

If you go to the Standings Plus home page this is the message that will great you:

"Standings Plus will be going "off the air" the end of August. July 15th marked the 3rd anniversary since my husband Rob's death and I've decided to move on with my endeavors. Good luck to everyone in the upcoming season"

Well it has seemed like SP has been around forever for us younger parents. Us 94's started mostly over there on Beth's forum. It was always a fun place to go and learn about this new sport for most of our daughters at the time; "Select soccer". As most of you know Dragon left there to come over to WPS after a few months just to have greater range of posting ability and PM's and avatars, etc. But that don't mean there was any true ill will against SP or any other forum. We will miss the easy to read standings and state cups brackets. We here at WPS wish Beth (and Cliff) all the best in the future, and a sincere thank you for all you have done in the past!

    "Surf Cup, the "Older" teams!"

The older teams played this weekend, sad to say none from Washington pulled out a championship... Still a great showing for all our older teams, way to go guys and gals!

"Long Beach Sun & Surf invite tournament"

A few Washington teams went down ta Long Beach this last weekend to strut their stuff! Here is a hat's off to the teams that made it into the Semi's.

Harbor FC Green (U13 Semi Finalist)

    Evergreen Rivera (U13 Finalist)

MRFC Thunder (U14 Tournament Champions!)

Great job to ALL teams that participated, but a special Heart & Fire award goes out to Evergreen for bein' finalists, and Thunder for bringing home the gold!

"PDL turning into the same ol' same ol'?"

    As this thread
http://www.washingtonpremiersoccer.com/ ... php?t=5950 points out, there is a good possibility that some of the "better teams" may be playing up in the upcoming PDL season. Well, aren't all the PDL A teams "better teams"? Just thought it was funny that even with a new name and new ideas on how to have the "best play the best", in the long run it appears (at least on the surface) to be headed the same direction as the way it was before. "The circle of Soccer"...what starts anew ends at the beginning or as some like to say, what goes around comes around

OTHER NEWS AND GOSSIP AND TIDBITS:

    "COACHS CORNER!"

Well I am back for another week, and this time someone submitted a great question for the article:

What is generally a coach's view on how many keepers to have on a team that is in the U11 to U14 age group? If there's enough talent at tryouts, is the coach more inclined to 1) Just have one full time keeper which will give that player all the field time and experience with maybe a field player as a potential backup in case of injury, or 2) Eat up a roster spot a field player could occupy by keeping 2 goalies on the roster who share time in order to have quality depth at that position in case of injury? Does the coach feel the development of the keeper will be hindered if they are sharing time in the box, or that a good keeper will get tired of sharing time and leave for another team? Is there a difference between what the coaches prefer and what is best for the team versus what is best for the Goalie herself?

This is actually a some what difficult question to answer. If a coach ever gives you a specific answer such as “I always take two keepers and split timeâ€￾ or “I only take one keeper to keep a roster spot openâ€￾ then he is not the coach for you. A coach shouldn’t already have his mind made up with decisions like this before tryouts and before he has seen the players available. He should take a look at the talent he has then make a decision on what will be best.

That being said there’s usually 3 situations that may occur when it comes to a keeper. The first is when you have one solid keeper and no one else at tryouts. In this case it’s a simple answer you take the keeper, but it is important to label a back up keeper. Hopefully your club has a good keeper program to train, so that the back up keeper can at least get the basics down.

The second is when you have no keepers show up. My advice is to take two players and let them know they will be sharing keeper time. Once again hopefully you have a good keeper program to help develop the players. The third is when you have two very good keepers. If only every coach had this problem. This is best case scenario because it will help create competition which will help each player develop. Plus if one is injured or leaves you still have a number 1 goalie.

Finally to answer your last question again. The coach needs to be flexible with every new team he takes. Also in all those situations there isn’t really a bad side to the keeper and their development. I personally love having two people fight for the starting spot since that competition creates a great environment. The MOST important thing in a keepers development though is probably the club you choose to play for. The top clubs usually have great keeper programs and have spend a lot of time working with them outside their teams.

Once again thank you for the question, hopefully that answers what you were asking. If you have any more please contact dragon and he will forward the question on to me.
Thanks Coach, we look forward to your articles every week, they are fantastic!

*And now, another great section added to the news letter*

    VIEW FROM BEHIND THE WHISTLE

After watching a few U11/12 games, I thought of something we might want to share with forum readers -- an important paragraph that was removed from the written LOTG in the 1997 "rewrite" because "everyone knows this" (it can still be found in the USSF ATR 5.5):

Law 5, International Board Decision 8

The Laws of the Game are intended to provide that games should be played with as little interference as possible, and in this view it is the duty of Referees to penalize only deliberate breaches of the Law. Constant whistling for trifling and doubtful breaches produces bad feelings and loss of temper on the part of players and spoils the pleasure of the spectators.

The challenge I see for many spectators who have a participant in the game is making peace with the concept that not every foul in the game needs to be called. Part of the player's enjoyment is the ability to demonstrate their skills. This includes working through some contact, recovering from a strong charge, a trip, a push, and yet somehow managing to keep the ball or make a great pass! As a spectator, learn to appreciate this demonstration of the player's skills.

Players can be knocked down spectacularly in a fair shoulder to shoulder challenge with relatively light contact, it's just a matter of balance and which foot the chargee happens to have on the ground. Players can end up in a heap after a collision that is just that -- a collision with no foul. The player on the ground is not sufficient evidence that a foul has occurred or that play should be stopped.

Law 5 IBD 8 REQUIRES that the referee be flexible and adapt to the needs of each individual game. While preserving the Spirit of the Game (safety, equality, enjoyment and honesty), the referee calls only what is necessary for control and fairness of that particular game.

How does a referee know what to call and what to let go (trifiling)? They look to the players (not the coach or the parents). What is the skill level and what are the players accepting? What do the players faces tell us and sometimes, what are players saying to us? The referee attempts to interpret the mood of the players and adjust to how they want to play (while still keeping them safe).

Next time you're on the sideline watching your young player in the game, take a deep breath and try to watch their face, look at their mood, admire their strength and how they pick themselves up and run right back into the melee!
Thanks "Ref" for the great article, hope you have many more!

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO MMMMMMMMMMMMMM?

Not much to go mmmmmmmmmm about this week, but do have a couple of things that will make you grin!

#1 Take a look at the recent "Play On" that is sitting in your mailbox, their are some great articles written by the players them selfs while attending the Far West Regionals! Great job little superstars!

#2 The Sounders woman do a fantastic job at placing 3rd in the whole country! Now they may be in need of $$ to help continue on...now that is a darn shame. We have SO MANY out there and on this site that are interested in girls/womans soccer, but most are worried about the here and now for our DD's. Maybe it is time we thought about their future in the area of professional teams as well. mmmmmmmmmm, that did make D go mmmmmmmmm ;)

Well, there is the 5th issue over and done with. Time sure flys when your having fun. Please submit your articles or ideas as early as possible. Sadly, D is only human and needs all the time his old fingers can get to get this out on time to all of you!

Let's hear you feedback, as always it is enjoyed   [/quote:10nunjun]
