    Regional league rumor

Rumor has it that the rising Stars U14G team will play only in the Region 1 league this year, not in MAPLE. If so, will Stars Athletic take over the Division 1 slot? And will Scorpions follow suit?

Cant speak for the Stars but the Scorpion 14s havent addressed this yet. We will consider our options in mid fall.

FSM can correct me if I am wrong, but the rising U15s Scoprs and Stars both left MAPLE and played only Region 1. So for the rising U14s to do the same only seems logical unless I am missing something. Fred has stated that Scorps passes the Div. 1 position down, so that is not a surprise either. I am unclear what the question is.

Where will they play in the fall since there is no Regional leagues? Or at least have not been any in the past? If they are just leaving Maple in the spring, it won't be any different then what was done last year.

Stars and Scorpions U14 (this year's U15) both played in Maple in Fall2006, and opted out of Maple for the Spring of 2007. I am not sure it is safe to assume the 2007-08 U14 teams would do the same. They are teams of a different quality.

Likely too early for teams to decide anyway. You don't know what you have for overall team talent, especially if a team has made some changes and gambles.

No doubt Stars and Scorpions rising U14G teams have added fresh new talent to last year's rosters. Also, Stars finished second in their subregional league last spring, so they would seem ready for regionals.

I know SC added a top defender and lost a goalie from last year. Stars added 3 impact starters and should be much stronger. They are both very well coached and will likely clash for the cup again this year.

Sub reg. was a joke, many teams could not compete in D1 here. Reg 1 will be very tough in comparison. Stars had a great run this spring but will they be able to compete with the PAE, NJ, and Va every week?

Scorpions 14s are ranked #7 in Region 1. They have beaten the #3, 4 and 5 ranked teams. They were semi-finalists at WAGS and finalists at Delco. They would have a good chance of being accepted in the league.

sorry Fred, I thought it was all state champs from last year, with last years Stars being an exception due to their quality( as would have been your U14's from the same year)..........I meant no disrespect

No problem... 16 teams get accepted. Some teams who arent current state Champions are accepted. I think Scorpions would have a good chance.

Stars and Scorpions U13 06-07 teams were pretty much equal and each could compete with anyone in Region 1. Both should get in.

It will be interesting though if Stars upgraded and Scorpions lost a goalkeeper. Did the Stars pick up the goalkeeper? Where did the 3 "impact" players come from?

Players will always migrate towards the successful teams. The only way the each of these teams will lose talent, would be from movement between these teams. Otherwise it will always be a net gain. The hardest hit are those players that are dropped. It's very hard to get over being cut from a team that's glory bound.

The interesting part of this will be how the regional selection process will work. They really don't like having two teams from one state.

It will also be interesting to watch two teams that don't play MAPLE always be the top contenders for the State Cup. As more of the State's strongest opt out of MAPLE, the State Cup will be less tied to it. How soon before we all beleive that the State's best players don't play MAPLE

                            From the region 1 site:

"With only sixteen positions available in any age group through out the Region, entry into the league is competitive. Each year, selection of the 16 teams becomes more difficult. We have established a promotion/relegation system to assure that the best 16 teams are selected for the league. An automatic bids for the Premier League will be given to:

=The semi-finalists of the previous year’s Regional Championship (four teams)

=The top four teams in each of the North and South divisions from the previous year’s Premier League play (eight teams).

=Each of the three Sub-Regional leagues champions (three teams).

Therefore 15 of the 16 bids may be earned by teams playing regional competition.

Teams that receive an automatic bid must demonstrate continuity of roster from the previous year to the current year. To demonstrate continuity of roster, a minimum of 51% of the players from the team's previous year roster that is on file with the Premier League must be on the team's current roster. The League will verify the roster of all teams receiving an automatic bid. Any team that receives an automatic bid and does not meet the continuity of roster requirement will be fined $2000 and will be automatically removed from the league.

Only teams that receive an automatic bid must demonstrate continuity of roster. This requirement does not apply to any other team that is applying to play in the Premier League. A team that may have earned an automatic bid but cannot demonstrate continuity of roster may apply to play in the Premier League by forfeiting their automatic bid. They will then be considered with all of teams that apply for the league.

That should be reworded: "How soon before we all believe that the State's most ambitious players don't play MAPLE." That's not to take away from the fact that the top players who make soccer their sole focus usually do migrate to these teams, but there are still many good players who could play on these teams that will continue to play in MAPLE.
