    Best College Showcase Tournaments

Our team (U16 Girls in the Spring) is looking to enter some tournaments for 2008. Any feedback on the best ones to try and attend? We know about Surf Cup, PDA & Score at the Shore. We are looking to put together a list to present to the parents.

    Thanks

First thing I'd ask, are what colleges are the kids thinking about. And, then do an honest self evalution of the team, what level tournament can they get into. Which tournaments have they already been to?

it is also important to remember that even the big showcases like Disney, Las Vegas and Surf Cup all will have multi tiers of competition and that at the U-16 age group next year these showcases will be part of one or both of the national leagues which will mean that they feature a "super group" at u-16 which is where the coaches tend to congregate. I think the advice about being realistic is the most important thing. I have heard of some D1 MAPLE teams that have yet to make it out of the RR that advertise to potential players that they will be going to this major showcase or that one. The fact is that absent a proven track record of success outside of Massachusetts it is unlikely that a U-16 team will be accepted into the biggies. But that may not be a bad thing as it is unlikely that most of the players have any great interest in playing in the PAC 10, Big 12 or WAC. By Junior year players who are thinking realistically about d1 should have already begun the process of narrowing down their choices so they can advise coaches were they will be playing and hope for a connection. As sopomores the open call of a big showcase may gain some attention but don't expect lots of it.

All the more reason to have made some contact with a coach before you go to one of these tournaments. You can't just go there and expect to be noticed. This brings up the timing issue. Since the sophmore year is still relatively early in the process you may not be able to get a coaches attention and then the trip may be wasted. Going to these tournaments is quite expensive. Might it be advisable to wait another year?
