    USA or Africa?

have heard many times how "new" soccer is to us here in America. Is it "newer" to us then it is to nation like Ivory Coast? I don't think so. Remember the US played in the 1938 World Cup while the first african country to qualify for the world cup was Morocco in 1970.

However, these african nations such as Ivory Coast seem to produce "world class players" year after year while we produce "MLS" type players. So what are they doing that we are not doing?

Have you ever noticed how little fan fair goes with Ivory Coast? They play way more pickup football just about anywhere. Here in the US we need to reserve a field before anyone would play.

Egypt was the first African nation to qualify for the world cup in 1934.

The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire was a French colony until 1960. Like much of Africa, they didn't couldn't even attempt to qualify for the World Cup because they were not a country.

Kids play every chance possible. A friend returned from South Africa with a homemade ball a kid made out of twine and plastic garbage bags. Took only a few minutes, and it was perfectly round, with the size, weight and characteristics of a futsal no bounce. Everywhere he traveled kids had pickup games.

Or it could just be their aren't any expensive professional youth coaches to mess up kids. Or parents demanding their teams win every game. Take your pick.

No TV, not computers, not video games.

And, the big EPL clubs are putting tons of resources into Africa. It will be the new South and Central America relative to recruiting.

They been saying that for 2 decades now and certainly some fantastic players have surfaced, but not as many as you might (or the professional clubs) had expected. Why? Because becoming a top international soccer player requires more than just athleticism.
