    Division 3 schools

I know some of the division three schools are top schools academically such as tufts, middlebury, union, etc. lets say the coach of the girls soccer team really likes a player but shes only an average student can a division three school have any impact whether she gets in or not?

3.0 average student or 2.5 average student? Average student with good SAT scores or average student with average or poor SAT scores?

      yes.

However, the influence of the coach varies from school to school.

Also, it depends upon how far below the average applicant the soccer player is.

Also, are there any other "special" factors, e.g., racial or economic diversity?

Well my daughters first choice is tufts, she has the ability to be a division 1 player but tufts is just her dream school. Her gpa is somewhere around a 3.4 and does soccer year round, also is a member of 3 clubs and has hours of community service. If the division 3 school wanted her to play soccer there real bad could the coach tip the administration scale for her?

For a DI caliber player with those academic credentials, YES!

            What are her sats?

what does 3.4 represent in the context of her school? (top 25% of a competitive surburban high school? top 10% of an elite prep school?)

Do your homework. check out the public information available about Tufts (Princeton review, etc.) Research the "tip" process for NESCAC schools.

Contact the coach. See if there is any mutual interest.

Checkout the resources available in your clubs. Ask your club coaches for their input.

Have a backup plan as coaches sometimes are misleading. You need to listen very carefully to what they say. "Supporting" an application may not mean much. Being "on my list with admissions" may not mean what you think it does. Ask explicitly; do not assume.

            Good luck.

Her school doesn't give class rank. Thank you for the responses though.

Not sure this is a legit OP.

Is 3.4 on 4.0 scale or 3.4 out of 5.0 or higher? Are SATs above 2000? AP courseload? The person who answered "YES" to Tufts was probably wrong and certainly answered yes based on way too little info. The answer probably is NO, unless 3.4 is on 4.0 scale with very high SATs (over 2100), full load of AP courses, some other hook like minority status, etc. And who told you she is D1 caliber? Have D1 schools offered scholarships, or just seems like a D1 player in your mind? Players generally get "tipped" when they are great players but also in or near the low range of regular acceptances. Don't see any indication of that here.

Of course the other factor is whether even if you could sneak in will the school eat you alive academically. Starting out at a place like Tufts in the bottom 3% may not be such a wise idea.

3.4 is on a 4.0 scale. she hasn't taken sat's yet as she is a junior and she takes honors in math. She has been told that she is D1 material and has got an offer from one D1 school middle of the pact and other D1 school have looked at her and talked to her she told them she wasn't interested. Her dream school is tufts though and with the 3.4 on a 4.0 scale were not sure if she would get in without a tip.

She sounds like she'd be perfect at Tufts. My sister went there, plenty of friends have gone there, and your daughter would be fine there academically and would just right for them athletically. Contact the coach, go ED 1, and good luck!!

She won't get in even WITH a tip. Only honors in one course is not going to cut it for a school like Tufts unless there is really some really incredible other aspect to her overall story, and even then I would doubt it.

Tufts isn't INCREDIBLY hard to get in. It isn't an Ivy League school. Though of course, it is highly ranked academically, it is still possible to get in with a 3.4/4.0 GPA. I know two people that have gotten into Tufts with a 3.5/4.0 (has taken only 2 honor classes).

For OP, it also depends on what she wants to major in.

Although the info is still limited, it seems unlikely she would have any chance without the full coach's tip. Tufts is a tough place to get an acceptance. However, a true D1 talent may be sufficient to attract the coach's attention. Your daughter's academics may be enough with the "tip". You will know alot more after the PSATs. It is not too early to be reaching out to the coach. Have your daughter do so asap!

With all due respect, and I am going to take a leap and guess that you don't do college admissions for a living, what exactly is in the data presented so far that would lead you to say "she sounds like she's be perfect at Tufts" and "fine there academically" and "just right for them athletically"? You're probably trying to the nice to the OP but the worst thing for the OP is to think something can happen that can't and end getting shut out because they completely misread what is possible.
