    HS Coach Suspended

Neumann likely not to return as Wilton girls varsity soccer coach

According to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, Scott Neumann’s return as head coach of the Wilton High varsity girls soccer team seems unlikely in the wake of his recent suspension as both teacher and coach.

Neumann, who teaches physical education at the school, was placed on “administrative leave” late last week. The move came after the parents of a Wilton soccer player filed a complaint with the school about an “inappropriate” incident which occurred at a recent practice, according to two sources.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Richards immediately placed Neumann on, “administrative leave until further notice, pending the outcome of an investigation by school officials of allegations of misconduct,” according to a press release from Wilton Public Schools.

“Wilton High School administrators are taking this situation very seriously. Since the investigation is still ongoing, it would be unfair to draw any conclusion at this time,” the release stated.

The school reportedly also sent home a letter to parents of the girls soccer team explaining its actions in the wake of the complaint.

During Wilton’s season-opening game, a 2-1 loss to St. Joseph, freshman girls coach Christian Wilhelm was in the role of acting interim head coach while girls basketball coach Jaclyn Woitkowski was also on the sidelines. Wilhelm was alone on the sidelines on Wednesday during Wilton’s 1-1 tie against Trumbull.

Neumann has been at the helm of the Warriors program for the last six seasons, winning two state championships in the process.

However, this most recent suspension is the second time Neumann has been investigated for “misconduct” charges levied against him, involving student-athletes he has coached.

In February of 2007, Neumann was placed on leave and investigated by school officials for having an “inappropriate relationship” with a Wilton High senior who had been a member of his soccer team.
Following the investigation, Neumann was allowed to return to both his teaching position and his coaches position.

The current investigation does not regard a relationship, but a physical incident that occurred at a practice, according to more than one source familiar with what happened.

Wilton athletic director Christy Hayes has been told by his superiors not to comment on the situation and to refer all questions to the school’s administration.

Neither acting WHS principal Bob O’Donnell or Dr. Richards had returned phone messages or e-mails in regards to an update of Neumann’s status as of the time of this posting.
