However let's check back and see how many actually make it through all 4 years of D1 with the same level of success and playing time. It is a cold cruel world in D1 athletics and your replacement is a heart beat away. It is such a grind to be a 4 year starter in college, especially in D1 and D2 where there is significant athletic scholarship $$$ on the line. Only those who have been through it and their families know who difficult this especially while balancing school and trying to fit some social activities in. It is a HUGE grind and most are relieved when it is over.
This post plus the question about the High Points player makes me think we should start a thread that shows just how many actually go the 4 years in a program. This is not meant to bash any of the players for the decisions they make. It is just to give parents of younger players a reality check about the future. Based on the Women's Recruiting web site archives, we can start with the class of 2009 who would be juniors.

So 38 girls/women total and it looks like all but 9 are still playing. That's not the 50% we've been told will drop out. What I find rather interesting is those kids that did drop out. There were high expectations for some of them.

One of the player's is dealing with a terminal family illness and is taking time off to deal with that. There are are sometimes things that take precedence over soccer.

9 no longer playing and 5 transfers, thus 37% of this small sample no longer play for the college they originally chose and were recruited by. Wonder if it will be 50% next year when they are seniors? My guess probably yes given the nature of injuries in this sport.

I think more than likely it will have to do with game time. If they aren't getting played this year, you might think they would want to just enjoy college life their senior year without all that entails playing college soccer.

If I recall past discussions they said 50% would not be playing after their sophomore year. That is not the case with this group. In this case, it's 24% since the transfers are still playing. That's nothing to sneeze at, but it's a whole lot less than 50%. I'll bet a 13% transfer rate by junior year is really low too when compared to the general college population. Perhaps if we included D2 and D3 in the analysis we might get closer to 50% since the monetary incentive to stay with it is less.

Sorry to hear that but the bigger point to be made is that 1 in 4 will face circumstances that may require them to quit playing college soccer.

"Soccer Mom Reality" , what will you do with yourself when your little mia graduates. With so much free time, will you become a cougar on the prowl? Do basketball or softball moms spend their free time this way, or is just the lonely soccer mom.

That has been discussed in the past. The vast majority of players stay within a few hours of home and those that travel the furthest tend to be the ones most likely to transfer.

They play club soccer so they will be able to play in college not to leave New England. They have accomplished their goal.
