    CFC United Boys

Is this happening this year? Has anyone seen tryout results for the other two branches Samba or Azzurri? I can't get a straight answer from the coaches on how it is all going to work. Don't want to commit to CFC if this isn't going to really happen.

Steve Coxon posted the following on soccerhead about a month ago:

No CFC United Boys teams until 2012/2013 season....first team will be U15...the current 14's.

All CFC Boys u12/14 will continue to train together once a week in the fall and spring.

So it sounds like this new Boys United program will not really benefit a U14 player since it will take a couple of years to get off the ground. Does anyone know how CFC plans to launch this part of their boys program?

Why do you say that? The program will have a U15 team next year. What "benefits" will a U15 player next year not get from the program? What do you mean by "take a couple of years to get off the ground"?

Ok so there are four teams with U14 Boys teams in CFC this year. They are fairly competitive with the exception of Azzurri. Now you think by just taking the top 18 players out of these teams they will be able to gel in the winter for the spring? There is no fall soccer because of HS. Plus getting kids to drive all over the state for this United team spells nightmare. It works for CFCs girls because of the ECNL play. I think it could work over time but not right away for the older players. Plus now you weaken every branch to make one so called All Star team....Is that worth it?

These are all the same issues that CFC faces on the girls side with CFC United. Also, note that CFC United started on the girls side before ECNL existed. To respond to your questions, (1) Re time to gel. Yes, it does take time to gel. The teams are at least initially not as good as their individual talent would suggest they should be. That being said, the teams are generally better than any of the constituent teams. (2) Re driving all over the state -- some don't want to do it, but most top players are willing to. (3) Re weakening every branch -- no doubt about it. Not unusual for one or more of the constituent teams to fold. But CFC believes that the draw of having your top team be very good is worth weakening the others and perhaps destroying some. From the overall club's standpoint, it seems to work. Not necessarily so good for individual branches or a lot of the players (eg those who don't make the United team).

Wasn't the girls landscape alot different back than compared to today's boys landscape?

I'm sure. But someone needs to explain how the differences will affect the CFC United model.

One difference is the boys side has two Academy teams that CFC has no part of in Oakwood and South Central. Than throw in the stability and history of Beachside plus FSA United and there seems to be four viable options before CFC. That doesn't take into account the NY clubs pulling some of CT top players. It seems like it will take some time for CFC to get their United team to be at the level of the other four. On the girls side CFC United is the crown jewel of the program, players are trying to get to the ECNL so it works with all the branches funneling to United. What is the sales pitch on the boys side? Where is their United team going to take you compared to the two Academy clubs?

Good points. At the risk of repeating them, I would say that, at this point in time, the boys CFC United would seem to be less of a draw than CFC United was on the girls side when it started up and continues to be today. On the girls side, the United teams have always been the top team (or at least one of the two top teams) in the state, and this was the case as soon as the United program started. This will not be the case on the boys side. CFC was in a stronger competitive position on the girls side when girls CFC United started than they currently are on the boys side, and when girls CFC United started there were no exclusive associations like Academy or ECNL that other clubs could offer but CFC couldn't. It is unlikely that boys CFC United will be able to replicate the success of girls CFC United in the short term.
