Why has the President's cup not caught on more. The state cup is very expensive and seems to be limited to a few of the larger clubs dominating. (no need to bash that is well taken care of everywhere else on this forum). So why not go for something diffrent at a much lesser cost? Do teams think by making the RR in state cup they will attract the elusive player they need to get to the next level? Or is it an ego thing for a coach to make the State Cup.

If you're asking seriously, I'd guess that it's because people confuse it with the Mass. soccer President's Cup tourney, which is open to town teams D3 & under, as opposed to MTOC, for Divs 1 & 2. My son's club team played in the tournament and did very well, but other club families thought it was a tournament for town teams. No one reads the small print. They might want to change the name. Then the tournament might get more interest.
The other thing is that having Nationals in Tennessee in July is ridiculous.

The US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup provides a progressive, competitive experience to US Youth Soccer teams from the state to regional to national level. The Presidents Cup gives players an additional opportunity to compete against teams from across the country at a high level for the joy and the challenge of the game. It provides the chance to experience a unique US Youth Soccer event with camaraderie, community and competition through sport. This competition is not for teams that expect to advance in the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series.

Scheduling was a problem last year. My daughter's team didn't go for it because they would have missed the Needham Tournament, and the opportunity to showcase in front of NE-based college coaches.

So your a U15 or U16 team playing in the State cup. Do you really think your team playing in D2 or Maple D will beat any of those top 3 or 4 teams in your age group? So why not choose a diffrent path? Pay $700ish to fail or pay $250 and play teams your equal with!

The competition is very low quality, and the schedule is tough.
It seems silly to travel to play against low level teams. If you win the state cup, you're playing against most of the best of the best at regionals. If you win the president's cup state cup you aren't even playing against the best of the rest.
Waste of time and money.

Because the level of competition stinks. And the schedule is very unfriendly. 'Nuff said.

Wow - nasty, much? As far as I'm aware, the Stars Boys who won U17 State Cup last year competed & won Presidents Cup Nationals the year before. So I guess they considered the tournament worth signing up for.
I'm not sure where you got your info about the poor competition. Or did you make it up? Two years ago this year's highly touted Aztecs boys' U16 team weren't able to make it past regionals, so I guess they might disagree with you on the competitiveness of the tournament. Shalrie's U14 Lions and the Valeo U15 Boys made it to Nationals, and represented the state well. But I'm sure if it suits your purposes to put the tournament down, you'll continue to do so.
Missing the Needham tournament...OMG...

You have to enter either the state cup or MTOC to enter the President's Cup. So you don't actually save any money on state cup entry - you still have to enter to qualify for President's Cup. The schedule is the normal schedule for any advanced teams playing beyond the end of the regular season. We played last year. It is decent competition and excellent competition at nationals. For our club it perfectly served the stated purpose, which was to give a team which is not a state cup semi finalist level an experience of playing at national level. In big states like Texas and CA there are plenty of high level teams that don't make state cup semi finals. It was really well organized and v exciting to take part. But the teams that 'should' be entering are D2 MAPLE level and up. It's advertised for travel but any travel team that make it as far as regional get killed unless there is something highly unusual about them. Playing travel v a lower half D1 MAPLE team in a qualifier doesn't work. Probably it should not be marketed at travel team level.....makes it look too weak for club, and too strong for travel.

I don't think you were at nationals if you wrote this. Also, in the U14 boys bracket, 4 teams that are in MAPLE D1 this spring, and 3 teams in Region 1 leagues this spring, competed in President's Cup last year . The competition was excellent.

OMG, the Needham tournament, isn't that the Needham Memorial Day Tournament and MPS College Showcase your talking about. The one MPS cares so much about that it sends its top girls teams to PDA and top boys teams to Potomac that weekend!

Still you are talking about teams that couldn't make it to the semis in MA making it to the nationals in the Presidents Cup. No doubt the competition ramps up hugely there, but it doesn't come even close to the USYSA nationals. Just making it to the USYSA nationals is a huge accomplishment for MA teams. I think this is where the dissing comes from. I agree that the Presidents Cup is well run and worth being part of. I also agree that marketing it as a town travel tourney is a mistake. There will always be exceptions to the rule, but high div 2 to mid div 1 is the rule.

And yet, the Aztecs boys (many seem to think they'll win U16 State Cup this year, and were just a hair from the top of D1 in MAPLE last spring) didn't make it past regionals a couple of years ago. Unless you've actually participated or spectated, you really can't speculate on the level of competition, I'm afraid.

I've seen the Aztecs boys play many times. They're good, not great. They did probably get unlucky not to get to nationals. Valeo almost won the nationals. Again, they are good, not great. That's fine, that's what this tournament is for.

Do people just put comments like this on here to make us spend time searching for the information? Yes, you do have to play state cup or MTOC. Here is the quote from the MassYouth current website info on President's Cup:
To be eligible, teams must compete in the 2011 Massachusetts State Cup or 2011 Massachusetts Tournament of Champions.

I agree with all your comments. Because the rule about qualification is 1 year out of date - meaning, for example, that in U16, it's last year's u15 state cup semi finalists that are excluded (because noone knows who the semi finalists will be in the current year) so you do get odd situations. Shalrie Joseph U14 boys lost 1-0 in the MA state cup final the same year they won the President's Cup nationals.
I think the tournament is great. After all, clubs travel all over the place to tournaments, This one is progressive and offers the experience to some club teams that would not usually have that experience. The teams have a lot of fun and for rising teams, it gives them regional and national level experience that will help them if they progress to higher levels in tougher competitions. Organization was superb. I just think to answer the original question that it needs more targeted marketing to the right level - high D2 and up.
