I thought it would be helpful to have one thread dedicated to results as they come in today. Andre Cup welcome as well! Age/gender/score would be appreciated....

On a score of 6-5 how can the team be dominant?
And again why the lopsided scores on the other two? Doesn't sound like a lot of fun for the kids who lost.

EDITED WITH INFO FROM STATE CUP SITE- Bolts (6 points) and Scorpions (6 points ) are through to the semis in Red Group - placement to be decided in tomorrow's game; Stars (6) are through in first place in Black group regardless of the result of tomorrow's gameS. Second place in the black group is up for grabs as Nor'easter has 3 points and Fuller and MPS each have 1 point.

GU14 Stars 11-1 over Nor'easter
GU14 Stars 8-0 over Fuller Hamlets
Fuller Hamlets U14 1 - MPS 1
Nor'easter 2 - MPS Renegades 0

Scorpions 4 - Aztecs 0
Scorpions 5 - NE Eagles 0
Bolts 4 - Eagles 0
Bolts 1 - Aztecs 0

I'm not sure what was meant by the lopsided scores and fun. This is State Cup - not a friendly. Neither of the two teams that were on the losing end of the Stars 14s gave up; they were both playing in the end - especially Nor'easter. In the FH- Stars games both teams were having some difficulty with the heat which was brutal so they both looked pretty slo mo at the end..

By the way I think the goal scored by Nor'Easter was only the second goal scored in the run of play against Stars this season (that is not a penalty or free kick). It was a beautiful goal on a fast counter that put them in the lead at the beginning of the game.

HEAT TOOK A TOLL TODAY. Fuller player taking away in ambulance along with 3 others needed to sit out with dehyrdation.

What ages? I know one GU14 FH player was dehydrated, but she left in her family car; I saw her as we left after the game and had spoken with her mother at half time. I did not see an ambulance at our game.

EDIT-My daughter just told me that FH GU14 was playing down at the end because three players were sitting out (had actually left?) due to the heat beyond the original one who left first at half time. It was brutal.

Susy, I don't think poster meant "fun" in usual sense of the word, I think it was meant to suggest it's "no fun" getting beaten badly (like it's no fun having a bad hair day on Prom night)!

Heat was brutal, plenty of good players from several teams down for the count.

Yes, one girl left the complex in an Ambulance. Actually came back to watch the 2nd game from the hospital after the fluids got into her. It was scary. Glad the refs gave a water break in the 2nd half. I seen that before in Florida. Make sense.....

I heard many parents say they felt like their skin was on fire and they weren't even running around! Saw one team really beat up with the heat exhaustion during the 4:00 p.m. games. It was a G15 game and two kids were real bad. Hopefully they are okay and drink about 2 gallons of water tonight.

Upset of the day has to be FCU 3 and WU 1 with #8 seed beating #1 in the B13 group. Most parents of the young ones thought it was Puma beating SAC 4-2 in the B12 first game of the day. I guess it was a 15 seed beating a 2 or something along those lines. I haven't been following the 11 and 12 groups this year.

I'd report the older kids scores but the powers that be got those brackets out of there as soon as the kids games in each age group were done for the day. I'll have em all tomorrow when I get home from the pitch though in case they aren't on the website that quick for those interested.

P.S. Both Stars and Scorps looked scary good in G14 today. First time I've watched either team this year. It would be something if Scorps beat Stars for state cups and both teams represent at regionals. Stars is, of course, in with the premier league spot no matter what.

I did not get out to Umass until the late game for the u16 girls but at that point the weather was beautiful.

I know the fields are not as bad as usual...least they were dry but what a difference coming from PDA to this...Hopefully this is the last year for Umass.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow...Low 70's

Does anyone know how many of the Stars' numerous goals yesterday were scored by the player who dropped down from the Stars' U15 team? That team must be missing her this weekend!

Dear God! Has anyone heard of GATORADE!?! GATORADE AND WATER MIXED TOGETHER!?! This could have been a disaster for these young women. THREE dehydrated players from one team?!? Has this team not been educated about the importance of hydration? I didn't see any other teams at the State Cup with this problem. If this team did indeed have to play down by 3 players due to dehydration, then someone needs to educate these players, their parents and their club about the necessity of pre-hydration and hydration throughout the game.
Best wishes to the girls for a speedy recovery. Thank goodness you are okay.

great question. that team was already stacked and now they added a national pool player from last years U14s. I know the u15 girls still won their first game w/o her but I think they will have a tough time repeating as state champs. it has really made a juggernaut of the u14 team however, they look unstoppable even next to a great team like the scorps 14s. I don't know why stars is even at state cup. they already have a spot in regionals and are huge favorites to go to nationals. why risk injuries?

Scorps 13's looked nervous against MPS. Close game. Even teams, Scorps won 2 - 1. Go ahead goal hit crossbar and bounced off keeper and in. Great job by both teams

Speaking with other parents and coaches a lot of teams had dehydration problems on Sat. The girl that went to the hospital also has a bad asthma problem and that was the main cause. Parents and coaches breech this all the time. You can lead a horse to water but cannot always make them drink. Nobody thought it would be 95 degree and so humid Sat. It took everyone by surprise..........

To make things even more scary for the competition the Stars have another Regional player on the U15's that could move down to the U14's!

they are doing something right at stars. only a few years ago the current stars u14 team would routinely get beaten up by scorpions u14. now they seem to have pulled even if not passed them and headed to a new tier. from andre cup to u16 they should have a team in every semifinal. too bad they are not closer to my kids!

U-15 Stars still have an awful lot of talent.....

Is today's U-13G's match-up between Blackhawks and MPS a replay of last weeks Needham fixture which got so much attention here?? Winner could likely advance to the final 4.

I believe that player was with the Scorpions until last year. While age appropriate as a U14, she is grade-wise a 9th grader, like most U15s, and wanted to play with those in the same grade. Scorpions policy is that players have to play on age appropirate teams, so she moved to Stars.

Dear God! Has anyone heard of GATORADE!?!

As someone said, you can lead a horse to water but....... Here's a tip. Between games in weather like yesterday, encourage a snack or light lunch with chips or some other salty snack. The salt will make a kid thirsty so that they will drink to quench their thirst and replenish fluids. The salt also helps retain fluids for the second game.

Agreed - the news of the Stars U15's death was premature. They went through their group 3-0-0 with the highest goal differential in the GU15s. This is a team with plenty of firepower and tons of talent.

There has been a lot posted here - some of which is inaccurate. I'd like to correct one of the inaccuracies because I don't believe it is fair to the player who actually earned a special recognition.

There are no national pool players on the GU15 Stars or GU14 Stars. There were five 1992 Stars invited to the national development camp last summer, but none of them is currently in the national pool (unless something has changed in the last month). As far as I know, there is only one such player in Massachusetts in the 1992 age group and she is from the Scorpions club. In fact she was one of only two players from the region at the last national camp for this age group (1992).

The lack of success/recognition of region one at the national level of ODP is another topic however.

Is anyone else a little sceptical about the grass fields being ready for next year at Lancaster? When I was out there they looked VERY thin in the grass dept.Dont count out another year at UMass just yet.

Anyone see the GU17 Bolts v CRU game?

MYSA website says 5-0 Bolts. Would have thought it would have been a very close match (the 2 teams tied in their MAPLE game).

If athletes are drinking large amounts of water, salt intake via Gatorade, salt tablets or other salty foods in critical to avoid hyponatremia (low sodium). Hyponatremia can be fatal as happened to a Boston Marathon runner last year.

I thought it was a very good game by 2 skilled teams. I havent seen your team play a whole lot as of late but I dont think you expected the other team to jump out like they did and it looked like your (team) was a bit concerned, yes. You obviously know your team much better than I and dont have the same view so. I will tell you that there were many parents on the sidelines who were nervous based on the comments.

In the end though you obviously did what was needed to be done.

Congrats on a successful weekend.

As a rival parent I can honestly say that this Scorps team is about as composed a group as you will find. From watching the match I saw no evidence of nerves at all. I was surprised at the level of MPS play. Far better than what I saw at Bandits.

Not that it is anyone's business, but I feel as though, as her mother, I should set the record straight for all the newsbags out there. The young lady who left in an ambulance at Amherst was not dehydrated. And yes, she and I have both have heard of water, gatorade, saltines, etc... There is such as thing as the medical privacy act and we will hold to that.

Hope that your daughter is OK!

I thought that it was fine for posters to note the hot conditions and it's affect on the players. It was also great to suggest advice on avoiding dehydration. But it was over the line to try and blame the players, parents or coaches for lack of proper hydration - sometimes you do everything right and still end up affected by the heat.

In your daughter's case wasn't heat at all. Best wishes for your daughter. and for the posters who were a little judgemental - lighten up. Every time something bad happens no need to cast blame without the facts.

06-05-2007, 11:47 AM
My daughter also had the start of dehydration at the end of the first game Sat. My wife was stating to her 3 days before the RR to drink, drink, drink. I don't think some realize how much fluid is used in playing a high level sport in extreme heat. With my daughter case we got her a good luch in air cond. and plenty of fluid before the next game. She was monitored during the game and was fine. I agree no need to throw the parents, team and even club under the bus. This is the same team as the above post.......
