Amherst College Names a New Men's Coach

"Amherst College is thrilled to announce Justin Serpone as its new head coach of men’s soccer. The decision came after weeks of candidates meeting with the players, coaches, and members of the search committee. Serpone arrives at Amherst by way of Duke University, and will start at Amherst July 1, 2007.

Amherst College Athletic Director, Suzanne Coffey explains, “the Athletic Department is looking forward to the future seasons of success under Justin’s leadership. He will make a great addition to our staff, and will continue upon the outstanding success the program has had in the past year.â€￾

As a Massachusetts native, Serpone is well aware of Amherst’s success at balancing academic excellence with athletic achievement, and believes his coaching experiences at Duke University, Northwestern University and Lafayette College have prepared him to continue such a tradition.

Serpone worked as the assistant men’s soccer coach at Duke in 2006, helping to lead the Blue Devils to an 18-4-1 record, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season championship, and ACC tournament championship. Duke earned the number one seed in the NCAA Championship Tournament and placed eight players on the ACC All-Academic Team.

Prior to Duke, Serpone served as the head assistant men’s soccer coach at Northwestern from 2003 to 2006 and at Lafayette from 2001 to 2003. In three seasons at Northwestern, the team compiled a record of 31-20-10 and made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament, achieving one of the most drastic turnarounds in NCAA men’s soccer history. Prior to Serpone’s arrival, Northwestern had posted a record of 9-42-4 from 2001-2003.

Beyond the soccer field, Serpone served as President of the Student Body and earned a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Computer Science. As a goalkeeper, he compiled a record of 61-19-4 for the Drew University men’s soccer team. Since graduating from Drew, Serpone has earned an “Aâ€￾ coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation and is a 2007 Master of Arts in Sports Administration candidate at Northwestern.

Serpone has seen great success throughout his coaching career, and is ready to continue a great tradition of success at Amherst. “I am very appreciative of the opportunities Duke gave to me,â€￾ he explains, “but am also very excited to get started at Amherst.â€￾

The former Duke assistant coach will have large shoes to fill, as he replaces an Amherst coaching legend in Peter Gooding. Gooding coached the Lord Jeffs from 1968 to 1989, and returned as a co-head coach from 1997 to 2006, compiling a record of 231-134-44 in his 32 years of service.

After a very successful 2006 campaign, during which Amherst posted a record of 12-3-2 (6-1-1 NESCAC) and qualified for the NCAA Championship Tournament, the Jeffs should give Serpone plenty of talent and experience to work with."
