    Preseason Activities

How are teams preparing for the preseason tournaments. Training? Indoor Leagues? Scrimmages?

Taking it low key and keeping costs down.

    No pre-season tournament.

Getting ready for spring with Indoor training, informal futsal, scrimmages and friendlies.

Where are you playing friendlies? Indoors or on full sized outdoor turf?

Over the next two weeks you should start to see lots of outdoor action on the turf. Lets just hope that we can avoid another big snowfall which will leave most turf fields unplayable until a melt. Most clubs now have access to at least one turf field and that has allowed teams to start earlier in March - although most grass facilities won't be near ready until April 1. Despite the economy, I think most teams will get in at least one pre-season tournament. Scorpion Bowl is hit or miss (as is NJ and mid-Atlantic venues) because of weather but I think most MAPLE D2 and above will make the effort to get in 3 or 4 legitimate games before the start of their season. For teams in the R1 Premier or sub-regional this is especially valuable because their season starts earlier (for some teams its in two weeks) and their ENY and NJ opponents have almost all been playing for the last month - including considerable tournament exposure. Most of the top teams in the big clubs practice all winter with regular indoor sessions and sometimes outside on plowable turf fields. We've all read the stories about those snow shoveling Rovers. However, for every team that has practiced twice a week since November, there will be four teams that will just start to get together in the next couple weeks and plenty that will hand uniforms out at the first game.

You're kidding, right? What club teams are getting together for the first time at the first game of the season?

There will be plenty of teams that won't have their full compliment of players show up until the first game. I'm not saying that the coach will call them on Thursday and tell them to show up on Sunday for a game but when it comes to HS age teams it is very rare to have practices attended by your full team.

What age group? What level of competition?
