    U 16 Girls State Cup

Sorry bad title so here is the correct age group:

Seeds are up. VERY VERY interesting. Obviously Terri and the Seeding Committee paid close attention to last year's SC results and little else. Puma got the #4 and a bye into the Round Robin. Aztecs B (old NESS) got #9 ahead of Eagles (10), Crusaders (12) and Western (13). MPS got a 14 and a 21. Best bracket is the Aztecs A's 5 seed draw. They will likely face WU in the RR preliminary game. Eagles have a relatively easy first two games but then get the Scorpions B in the final prelim. You could end up with 5 Star's and Scorpion's teams in the RR. Looking at the seeds you can pencil Sorps Elite, Stars United and Rovers into the semis, it is now just a question of which team (Aztecs, Eagles or Western) gets the 4th semi-final birth out of the Stars United bracket.

Aztecs B shows a lot of girls on the Gotsoccer site that have no numbers. I would assume that means that they are new players. Where did the old players go? Aztecs A? Seacoast?

how did eagles, a d1 team, and made it to group play, not make the top 8?

Not really. They didn't make it too far into the SC last year. They are unproven. NESS should be ahead of them in the seedings. at least they made it to RR last year.

As the original poster said, it is fairly obvious that with this age group the seedings were based mostly on last year's state cup. Persoanlly I thik this is a mistake because it over-rates teams like Puma and Aztecs/NESS. However, I do not think it is unfair. The rules give the seeding committe vey little direction, except that they should consider prior SC results in their decisions. That is exactly what they did. Aztecs "A" probably has the best argument for a 4 seed and a bye. They were runner-ups in MAPLE and played very well in a more difficult group in the RR, but ultimately the committe gave Puma the nod - despite Puma's failures in MAPLE. It's a close call but rewarding Puma for advancing to the semis is perfectly understandable. Ultimately it probably won't matter as the 4 and 5 seeds are in the same RR group. Sure Aztecs will need to win a game to get to the RR but if they do then they will get a chance to face Puma and prove the committee wrong. Similarly the committe seemed to place greater value in the fact that the Aztecs/NESS made the RR than in non-SC results. Inter and Hamlest had decent SC and MAPLE results so their top 8 seeds makes sense. Scorpions B finished 3rd in MAPLE which placed them ahead of oter teams that didn't advance to the RR. Personally I like the chances for the Eagles and Crusaders to reach the RR. Western has a very difficult road against Aztecs.

Red Group: Stars of Mass-D Fuller Hamlets NESS FC Puma
Black Group: Scorpions-C Aztec SC Stars of Mass-R NE Eagles

They should be included in the top 8 for that reason if the committee is basing seedings on last year's results. I can't understand why they were not unless roster continuity is the reason.

Maybe it is roster continuity. The teams in the RR this year have few new players. Seems Mass Youth Soccer rewards teams for staying together.

With the fact that teams are playing in multiple leagues, basing the seedings on last year's results makes sense, because it is particularly difficult to compare apples to apples with teams that are playing in Maple, Sub Regional or MASC (Super Y). Like the ranking/ratings, no one knows until they play how changes to roster or coaching will affect teams. Understood that everyone gets themselves in a knot over the seedings because of the importance of getting deep into the tournament to a team's history (and future) and player's resume, but that is exactly the problem with youth soccer - too much importance is placed on tournament play often to the detriment of the players themselves.

Eagles were completely out of their depth at State Cup last year losing 2 games very heavily. They were a D2 team so why should they get in the top 8, given their lack of success? League results are considered above just getting to the RR. The seedings as given by the committee have followed the directions of previous year's state cup results then league play. Eagles have no case and will justifiably have to earn their way in, which they should do if they are that good.

The seedings really help Scorpions Elite. They are favourites to get the top seed out of the group and with this will have an easy semi final. On the other hand if things go as predicted Stars Rovers will play Stars United which will be a very tough game for both teams and fatigue whoever makes the final against Scorpions Elite. I am sure Stars wanted both Rovers and United in same group.

By no means is it a slam dunk the Scorpion top Rovers in that group.
