Texas girls hoops team seeks forfeit of 100-0 win
    18 hours ago

DALLAS (AP) — A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 blowout has apologized to the losing school, calling the game "shameful and an embarrassment."

Officials from The Covenant School, a private Christian school in Dallas, said Thursday they are seeking to forfeit the win because "victory without honor is a great loss."

Covenant defeated The Dallas Academy 100-0 on Jan. 13. Covenant led 59-0 at halftime.

The Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and just 20 girls in the school. The academy specializes in teaching students with what it calls "learning differences," such as short attention spans or difficulty in concentrating.

I read this on a HS website yesterday. In my opinion, it should never have gotten to this. The coach should be suspended for allowing his team to carry on like this. Within the first 5 minutes, he knew what the outcome was going to be, and should've called time out and taught his players about sportmanship. Even with a shot clock you can stop scoring at will. This link discusses some of the fall out at the losing school. Give that coach a lot of credit for not making a scene in front of people.

Congrats to the school for stepping up. Fire the coach, period.

Some coaches may disagree, even those on the losing end. The better team is in a no win situation. The only thing I would have done differently is ask the other coach if they were open to merging the teams and trying to play fairly even. I'll bet both sets of girls would have preferred that

          I do disagree.

          Form the article:
The box score that the Covenant head of school has been staring at reveals that his team scored 35 points in the first quarter before building a 59-0 lead at the half. The score after three quarters was 88-0.

"They are really good," Civello said. "Their point guard is terrific. This is what it came down to in the second half: steal at half court and layup. Steal and layup. Steal and layup. It was a layup drill. They finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left." Covenant's point guard had 48 points.

The winning coach had options, and I like yours about merging teams.
          1. Remove players and let others play
          2. refuse to shoot
          3. turn the ball over on purpose
          4. foul the oppsition to send them to the line and foul out players on the winning team

All of this does not make it easier for the losing team, clearly the teams had no business playing each other. However, when you are winning 35- 0, and 59-0 at half something should have been done by the coach.

How about playing zone and stopping the steal at half-court trick. They wanted to get to 100 and then afterwards when the feedback was negative the re-considered their behavior. That's not sportsmanship. What a joke!

Looks like the coach got fired.
