    EARLY SPRING COLLEGE SHOWCASES

We have made it through the Late Fall and Holiday showcases. What are teams doing for the early spring (March and April). Vegas is the big boy on the block with over 450 college coaches attending for boys and girls, but there are many others including some mid-Atlantic tournaments that are a little less selective but also much less expensive than the west coast and southern options.

USYSA National League will be playing games in Vegas. I assume the Scorps U16s will need to go to Vegas to finish out the regular season. MAPS is the same weekend as Vegas as is the Jefferson Cup for boys. Jefferson Cup for girls is the weekend after Vegas.

The Jefferson Cup has become almost exclusively a R1 tournament. Certainly all east coast teams. Last year the Championship Division in U15 was strong although neither PDA nor the Stars attended. This year both Scorpions and Montclair would need to play both Vegas and Jefferson and then start the R1 Premier League on three consecutive weekends. Unlikely to happen. There are other R1 teams in the Red Bull that will have to determine if it is worth traveling to both tournaments. This will further lessen the quality at Jefferson. However, it will provide an opprtunity for some other Mass teams (Aztecs, MPS?) to go down to Virginia and play in a very good pre-season tournament.

Scorpion Bowl is not a gotsoccer tournament and they use Blue Sombrero for the tourney web page. This provides less college coach information. Still, just about all the coaches that attend the Scorpion Bowl will go to see specific players who have contacted them and are already on their recruiting board. I believe that last year about 20 coaches went to the SB. I would expect similar numbers his year.

I believe Scorp Bowl was a gotsport tourney last yr and will be again this year:

Last year's Scorp Bowl coaches that signed up (not sure how many actually showed since the weather messed up the schedule):

15 signed up including 4 D1 coaches. Last year the U15 (now U16) Scorps played up in the U17 division. This year they will be in Las Vegas with the National League. Not sure if any of the U16 or U17 teams that are drawing considerable college attention will be at the Scorpion Bowl. I would expect that the above poster is correct and that the interest will be for some local D2 and D3 coaches to head to Thayer and see players that are already on their contact list. Good opportunity for that. Although as last year showed, even with turf fields the weather is a real detriment to holding a mid March tourney in Massachusetts.

Looks like over 100 womens programs have already signed up for Vegas. Far fewer on the boys side. Four interesting New England attendees are Clark, Leslie, Merrimack and Norwich. All but Merrimack are smaller D3 programs. When you look at the teams playing in Vegas, there might be a total of 4 or 5 from New England and then a few more from the northeast. You wonder what value attending Vegas would have for some NE programs. Of course there are worse places to be in mid March than Las Vegas.

I too find this interesting. The value of a tournament like Disney or Vegas would seem to be in the ability to ID and evaluate lots of talent over a 3 day period. But that talent is from across the nation with New England being one of the lesser represented areas of the country. However, ENY and New Jersey tend to send many more teams to these tourneys. Does attendance at these national showcases, for teams like Merrimack, mean that they are committing to a more national/regional recruiting effort? Who exactly would Clark or Norwich be looking at in Vegas? Couldn't those same players be evaluated at R1 games or at PDA in May? I agree that there are worse places to be than Vegas and that it is their money not mine, but does a trip to Disney, Vegas or even Jefferson result in value back for D3 programs?
