    Boston Herald

For those of you whom are adults (many of which I assume are fathers and mothers of children) on these forums who are obsessed with constantly trying to ruin the reputation and credibility of clubs (Stars, Scorpions, MPS, NEFC, etc...) coaches (JD, FM, KC, PB, BB, etc....), college teams and their coaches (Wheaton, Union, etc........), etc.......based on hatred, shame on you. It's disgraceful. Read below.

Vehicle dealer sues to unmask critic making false claims

A Westford entrepreneur, seeking to strike a blow to anonymous online defamation, has asked a federal court to force out of hiding the Internet bogeyman whose poisonous accusations on a consumer Web site he says destroyed his new company in only two months.

In his lawsuit filed yesterday in U.S. District Court, James Cronin requests that PissedConsumer.com be subpoenaed to turn over the name and any other identifying information about his detractor so he can recover damages and restore his reputation.

“Everyone’s entitled to free speech until you’re breaking the law,” Cronin’s attorney, Jerrold Neeffcq, told the Herald. “There’s got to be some kind of cap on what people can say and do.

“We’re seeing this as a growing trend,” said Neeff, who specializes in online defamation. “These rogue, Web-based sociopaths are able to post negative comments that are false and defamatory about anyone they want.”

The site claims to be “dedicated to let you vent your aggravation. We will publish your complaint on our site to be seen by many other consumers all over the world.”

Within days of Cronin’s October opening of JC Motorsports in Hudson, N.H., to sell used, off-road recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles, someone began posting complaints on PissedConsumer.com, stating he was “unlicenseed (sic),” “mostly likely not insured,” “proboly (sic)” collecting unemployment and not paying taxes - and that “his stuff looks like it belongs in the dump.”

Neeff, a lecturer in law at Boston University, said the postings were brought to Cronin’s attention by concerned potential customers who’d Googled JC Motorsports. By the end of December, Cronin closed up shop.

Cronin was registered with the New Hampshire secretary of state, and Hudson licensing and code-enforcement officials told the Herald they had no record of any problems with him. The Better Business Bureau also showed no complaints.

“He did everything by the book, only to be shut down by something so simplistic, but so determined,” Neeff said. “It’s very easy these days to operate behind the guise of the Web.”

Neeff said both his and Cronin’s attempts to work out the problem with PissedConsumer.com have been rebuffed. The Web site did not respond to a request for comment.

Neeff said the site enjoys some legal insulation courtesy of the Communications Decency Act unless it fails to remove the JC Motorsports postings, which yesterday were still online.

First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech.

The vast majority of what you read on this forum are people's opinions, right or wrong. Don't think they would pass muster as slander/libel. Anyone disagree?

What a crybaby this guy is!! He opens up a fledgling new (luxury item) business at one of the worst economic times to do so in the last 80 years. And he blames some no-name website ?? Maybe it was just an idiotic business model and your timing was piss poor. But of course, he feels that he is victim and has to sue somebody. What a buffoon.

Well, it would be if most people in this forum knew what it was. But they wouldn't know the truth unless it was sold at Starbucks.

This kind of stuff has been going on forever in this country in one forum or another. The only difference I can see is that now it is opened up more for the masses because everyone has access to the Internet and can say whatever they want, adding more voices to any conversation. Consider....

                      http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/4...s-from-history.

Free speech doesn't mean everything is allowed, but it does and should have a lot of room for the controversial, offensive, idiotic, and even the downright mean and nasty. Take that away and we're North Korea or Iran.
