Napoli named CAA Rookie of the Year, Jatkola All-Rookie
    Nov. 6, 2008
    Boston, MA

Northeastern University women's soccer freshman Veronica Napoli was named CAA Rookie of the Year, All-Rookie and All-CAA third team and freshman Gabbi Jatkola was named All-Rookie and All-CAA third team, it was announced at the CAA awards banquet on Thursday night. The Huskies play James Madison in the CAA Tournament semifinals on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va.

Napoli was named Rookie of the Year after scoring 12 goals and adding five assists for 29 points in her first season. Her 12 goals and 29 points are both second-best in a single season at Northeastern behind only Keri Irwin (1996). Napoli scored her first collegiate goal against UNH on Sept. 12, and tallied her first collegiate hat trick against Drexel on Sept. 27. Napoli was named CAA Rookie of the Week three times and was also named Player of the Week on Sept. 29. Her incredible speed has contributed to the team’s success by spreading the defense and drawing multiple defenders.

Jatkola was named to the All-CAA third team and the All-Rookie team after a stellar season at the midfield position. Jatkola has five goals and three assists for 13 points and has been a huge asset to the team’s defense. Jatkola netted her first collegiate goal to force overtime against Creighton in an eventual 2-1 win for NU on Sept. 5. In the two most recent games, Jatkola scored the game-tying goal against Hofstra in the 85th minute in a 2-1 win on Oct. 30 and scored the game-winner at UNC Wilmington in the Huskies' 1-0 victory in the CAA quarterfinals on Nov. 4.

Before Northeastern, Napoli played for the Prout School where she captained the team both her junior and senior years. While at Prout, Napoli set school records with 128 goals and 50 assists. She earned All-State first-team selections in both of the years she captained. Her sophomore year, Prout went 19-0 and won the state championship.

Jatkola played varsity soccer at Dennis-Yarmouth for four years, serving three as captain. She was named team MVP, Eastern Mass. All-Star and Atlantic Coast League All-Star all four years. Jatkola led Dennis-Yarmouth and her club team (Mass Premier Soccer) in scoring all four years and was a Super Y national pool selection from 2004-06. Jatkola’s club team won the national championship in 2007.

Northeastern is 11-8-1 overall and went 7-5-0 in the CAA this season, a remarkable turnaround. In 2007, Northeastern battled injuries and finished 4-11-3 (2-7-2 CAA).
