    Students support ousted coach
They plan to attend Monday school board meeting

Some Center Line High School students upset about the firing of a popular soccer coach plan to take their complaints to top district officials.

The students, including members of the girls varsity soccer team and the boys junior varsity squad, believe Jeffrey Barbiere got a raw deal. They plan to present signed petitions opposing his dismissal at Monday's meeting of the Board of Education.

"We find it hard to believe someone would question Mr. Barbiere's character," said Jessica Brown, the team's goalie on the girls team.

    Brown said team members learned

Barbiere was removed from both coaching roles by administrators at the high school for not being an adequate role model for student-athletes and showing poor sportsmanship.

Barbiere, known to students as "Mr. B," also teaches social studies at the high school.

"We don't understand how he's not a good role model to coach, but a good enough role model to teach," Brown added.

Phone messages left for Center Line High School Principal John Summerhill on Thursday and Friday were not returned.

Superintendent Judy Pritchett said coaches serve in an at-will capacity, meaning they serve at the pleasure of administrators. The district's top administrator confirmed Barbiere was relieved of his coaching roles Oct. 30.

She declined to comment on the reasons, but pointed out the move does not involve Barbiere's teaching duties.

"It's a personnel issue, so obviously I'm not going to comment on the reasons," said Pritchett, who also declined to provide details about a paid suspension of Barbiere a few years ago.

Attempts to reach Barbiere for comment were unsuccessful. He was hired as a teacher in January 2000. He has taught continuously at Center Line High since then. He was appointed to coach the boys junior varsity and girls varsity squads in the 2001-02 school year.

A few students began circulating petitions on Wednesday, collecting approximately 300 signatures including those from about 30 parents in the first day, Brown said.

"We know Mr. Summerhill is doing it because he didn't like him," said senior Dany Antoon, 17, who played on the Panthers' junior varsity squad.

    "This is all just personal."

The boys squads recently wrapped up their seasons. The girls soccer teams begin play in March, with the ouster of Barbiere forcing school officials to find a replacement coach.

"We have not even posted" the opening, Pritchett said.

Star Curley, vice president of the Center Line Education Association, the union representing the district's teachers, declined comment.

      Students, parents support fired coach

Center Line schools officials may review dismissal for reported poor sportsmanship

The firing of a popular soccer coach at Center Line High School may be reviewed by the district's Board of Education after a standing-room-only crowd came to the coach's defense.

Board members said they will delve into the dismissal of Jeffrey Barbiere as boys junior varsity and girls varsity coach, following an outpouring of public support from players, students, parents and a handful of teachers at Monday's school board meeting.

The crowd numbered more than 100 people.

Jessica Brown wiped tears from her eyes and drew applause from the audience after openly supporting Barbiere.

"It was hard, but I'm glad I spoke on behalf of the team," Brown, a 17-year-old senior who will be a captain of the girls team in the spring, said Tuesday. "He is a wonderful coach and he is a wonderful role model."

A woman who identified herself as the mother of two Center Line High School graduates praised Barbiere for pushing students not only athletically, but academically.

Barbiere, who did not attend the board meeting, also teaches social studies at Center Line High School. He retains his teaching position.

Students who led a petition drive backing Barbiere said the dismissal is due to alleged poor sportsmanship and for not being a good role model.

District officials have declined to specify the reason for the termination.

Late last week, Superintendent Judy Pritchett said coaches are "at will" positions that serve at the pleasure of administrators. She refused to elaborate on Barbiere's removal, calling it a personnel matter.

With most board members offering little comment about the controversy, the board took no official action but some on the elected panel indicated they would review it.

Board member Shannon Boccomino, however, argued that the public deserved answers.

Barbiere was hired by the district in January 2000 and has spent each year since at the high school. He began coaching soccer in the district in the 2001-02 school year.

Reached on Tuesday at Center Line High, Barbiere told The Macomb Daily: "At this time, I really do not want to comment. I want to let the system play itself out."

School Principal John Summerhill did not attend Monday's school board meeting. He has not returned phone and e-mail messages left by the newspaper.

Brown said the petitions submitted to district officials included signatures from 500 students and parents in the district, including some that were collected in neighborhoods off school grounds.

"I applauded people for voicing their opinions," board President Gary Gasowski said Tuesday.

Gasowski, who said he has not spoken to Summerhill about Barbiere, said officials await "some responses" from high-ranking administrators about the coach's removal.

"As you know, with personnel matters you have to be real careful," he added.

Senior Dany Antoon said board members seem receptive to student concerns.

"It showed they all cared," he said. "They actually listened. They didn't brush it off."

The boys junior varsity soccer squad recently wrapped up its season. The varsity girls Panthers begin play in March.

The Board of Education's next regular meeting is Nov. 24.
