    Scorps declining?

It seems like the Scorps may be on the decline. They have some strong teams at the
older age groups, but the younger ones are decidedly a far cry from what the level we're used to seeing from this club.

    Thoughts?

How many times is this subject going to come up? You'll know the answer in 2-3 years, so no point in speculating now because things can change very quickly.

True dat. That said, KC was still trying to recruit some players as recently as a few weeks ago prior to the u13's State Cup game vs. MPS. Lack of confidence in the squad he has perhaps?

ECNL is sure to increase interest and new talent at this years try-outs.

Let me guess, you are trying to encourage the NEFC / Scorpion back and forth bashing. I don't think its good for anyone, and probably its not good for you.

Or push them away. Many dont want to make that kind of committment. Its not for everyone. Scorps lost many players that were tired of spending their youth in a car or plane

At which age group? And where did these players go? There is a perpetual myth that gets advanced here that the a whole bunch of the state's best players don't play for the best teams. Certainly it isn't 100% true that the top talent eventually ends up with the top 2 or 3 teams. There are a few hold-overs with smaller clubs, but you need only look at the yearly college recruiting lists to find that probably 75% of the D1 players come out of the Stars, Scorps and MPS. The problem for the Scorps is that they typically only have a single team at each age, and if that team leaves or unwinds (like at this year's U18 level) they are left with nothing. That just doesn't happen with the Stars or MPS. NEFC is not a low cost/ low pressure alternative. Their ultimate success will depend on an ability to position their younger teams for top competition as they advance and get older. It can happen but it isn't a guaranty. The Scorpions acceptance into the ECNL will help them attract more top players, who are still willing to make the time and financial commitment necessary to be seen and get recruited. Whether its all worth it is an individual determination, but nothing going on now is going to open more doors for players from clubs like the Aztecs or Western to forgo the opportunities with the big name alternatives. For every kid that stays with those teams and gets a chance at D1, there are 3 or 4 players that leave for "greener" pastures.

With kids that are long time rivals of Scorpions I do not see this decline. Sure they took a hit when NEFC poached their teams but my money is on FM etc putting a ton of work in at the younger ages to capture all the south shore talent in the future. I would not underestimate their ability to do so. MPS and/or NEFC would love to believe that Scorpions are in decline but the reality is that the Puma/Eagles venture is in early days but it's the same people asa always, plus Boates and Marinoa, nd although MPS has been established for as long as Stars or Scorpions they have never managed to get close to the same quality. Expect propaganda from both these clubs against ECNL, as they didn't get acceptance, but in the end it is a huge recruiting bonus for Stars and Scorpions to be playing at that level.

That's because the Scorpions were notorious for starting their kids on that path way too early. It's not just the kids that get burnt out but their parents too.

This discussion actually mirrors the one that is taking place in the up and coming thread. As long as Fred continues to drive the Scorpions there is no reason to believe that they will be any less than they currently are. That said you shouldn't expect them to be much bigger than they are either. The Scorps are what they are. Fred personally turns out some great players and some great teams but history shows that the club hits some speed bumps every couple of years that limit its upside potential. The only thing that they have to deal with now that they traditionally haven't is more organized competition for players on the outer edges of they traditional base. The question isn't whether or not the Scorpions will continue to land the star players from towns like Braintree or Whitman but rather will they continue to attract the star players from towns like Westwood or Needham. The thing is Fred is an extremely successful coach with a track record so do not underestimate the attractiveness of that for some players. The only thing one would hope is those player's parents would learn to be "civilized" on the sidelines. :)
