None of the above. It is more of a survival of the fittest with the lack of calls.

Each kid would be dfferent. A strong defender might want to move up front for a change and vice versa.

Striker. They get all the credit and accolades.

NOT midfield = the ball just flys over them back and forth - like being a human tennis net !

This assumes they'd have the option. For those who play club HS may be viewed as being lesser or for fun, etc. but to the coach and oftentimes most of the team HS is it. The "superstar" will be put wherever they can make the biggest impact. Haven't heard of too many situations where the player calls the shot on position and playing time. My son is in a position he loathes, but it's where he's asked to play so he does it. Maybe if he was Ronaldhino he could pick, but he's not so he takes what he gets.

True. We see this all game long with my daughters team. Kick ball to the quick striker. Midfielders are lucky to get a touch.May as well be playing a 8-0-2.

AH! The old 8-0-2 formation! The 9-0-1 is panning out nicely for our HS. It’s getting hard to count the “Ws” Oh wait! There are no “W’s”…

Playing the midfield anyway close to resembling a midfielder is mortal sin at my daughter’s HS. She made the dreadful mistake in her first Varsity appearance of possessing and bringing the ball forward in an efficient, well timed advance with a proper finishing distribution that resulted in a back of net placement. Her reward was an immediate pull-off and benching. Never to start a game again. Reason? How dare she NOT execute the “one-on and blast into orbit technique” that her teacher… oops, I mean coach taught her.

Her HS fate was sealed days later when she had the audacity to bring a ball down to her feet in the sweeper position… advance it past 4 defenders and drill a 38 yarder spot on. She was pulled before she felt the first high-five. Looks like a promising JV season ahead. Anyone know where I can buy some used field hockey equipment? Club is four months away… she needs to keep busy.

I hear you loud and clear. Thanks heavens for good sarcasm in times like these. Good to hear your daughter had some fun playing the real game before the pull out.
If you're not a striker or a GK, where can you play real soccer in HS?

My daughter has played striker for several years. Noone ever played her at mid, doesn't know the position. She started varsity last year as a striker and did very well. A new coach came in, played her at mid the first couple of games expecting my daughter to know the position. She played adequate at best so the experiment pretty much failed. She's now fighting to get playing time at striker.

Just waiting for the club season to start.

I think you should take a long hard look at your clubs coaching philosophy. How dare he or she teach the proper way to play!! In our club, the players are taught the right way and the HS way.

Just after the club season ends, our coach holds 2 weeks of intensive 'non-training' he calls it and this is the syllabus

*How to make your first touch go back to the opposing team
*The Thru Ball, fact or fiction?
*Reverse Psychology - Dont shoot at the net
*How to 'look' fast
*How to pronounce words with a mouthguard
*How to placate your coach when you know more
*How to deal with an upper classman who shouldnt be there

and don't forget...... to let the ball bounce at least two or three times before you go for it.
