View Full Version : US WOMENS SOCCER
Us womens team is horable! The smaller Brazilians are so much more creative!
Brazil is missing 3 super stars. The US needs to start over on players and style. The World has caught up! Keep going odp and get your tall unskilled players. The way the US is playing Korea with a full team would be winning 2 nil!
Please take your little midget kid who can't make the ODP team and go to Brazil and make a team over there.
Hey sour-grapes-midget-maker...the U.S. and our big players got the result against your super short super fast Brazil team....1-0. I guess we better stick to our big girls at ODP.
Brazil was missing 6 players and played away, US long ball is very hard to watch! (Bright spot Amy Rodriguez 5' 4" with skills and speed won the game! First poster has a point. Wambat looked like a robot with a club foot.
I normally do not bash, but our team looked horrible.
1-0 against a severly depleted team.
1-0 against a team that has only played five games this year. Our girls, after twenty games, should be a fine tuned machine and they looke like anything but.
Our team looked slow and unable to keepe up. Our midfield was horrible. The number of times Brazil ran free in the middle is unexcusable. We did not posess one time in the offensive third. We continue to look for the long ball and Wambach score.......
I certainly hope our team gets better before the olympics.
I am not giving Brazil Kudos, but our team was just BAD.

Getting the result in a friendly against an opponent who is missing their three best attackers is nothing to hang your hat on. We scored from a miscue in the back. We could not score during the run of play. We were shown to be inferior technically and tactically. Do you even understand what real soccer looks like or have you been watching American soccer so long that it has caused your brain not understand the difference between good soccer and the style that we are currently playing? Had Brazil had Marta, Christiane, and Daneilla we would have suffered an embarassing loss.

Will there be a replay on tv? If so what day, time and channel.
They played on ESPN so I don't know when or if they will replay it but the two teams play again on the 16th on Fox Soccer Channel at 10:00pm I think. Maybe we will figure out how to beat the Brazil second team by then.

Brasilans don't say "nil" ???
The poster never claimed to be from Brazil, they just told the truth. If your kid is playing soccer that looks anything like what our USWNT is playing then change clubs fast. While you may get a result, you will forever be known as a person who played the game of soccer but nobody will call you a soccer player.
The WNT looked ok. I only saw the second half, though.
Adriana Rodrigues is 5'4", and seemed to be the quickest player on the field. I don't know how much shorter she can get without having to play in the special olympics?
The teams play again this week in San Diego. At least people are watching these games.
At the highest level the result is what matters. You want to play pretty soccer with Ronaldihno type skills then go ahead. The bottom line USA 1 Brazil 0. My 5'10" 15 year old daughter has no skill whatsoever but she's an ODP hold over and will make the Regional Team for the second year in a row. That will look great on her resume for college. All the short speedy skiiled girls are going home....thanks for coming. Take a flight to South America or Mexico and go make an ODP team there. USA will be gold medal winners in Bejing with our big over grown no skill forward. By the way 99 goals in 126 international appearances....I'll take Wambach over your half-pint daughter any day....and so will the experienced ODP coaches.

5' 4" is actually not small for a female soccer player. That she has skills and speed contradicts your original posts. You people are bitter and just love to bash because your kid, not matter what size she is, will never make a select team. The US Women's National team is still the best in the world. That the rest of the world is catching up is a good thing and good for women's soccer.

They will not win at the Olympics. Sorry.

If they play the way they did yesterday, no gold for them.
They will get through the pool as they have a very easy pool, but they will not get past the better teams.

So apparently it is not a soccer match, but rather a height contest. Considering the current state of ODP I actually believe you when you say that a tall unskilled kid is selected over a smaller skilled player. That actually makes sense considering the current direction of our USWNT. The result in a friendly when you are aware that the opponent is not playing their first team is not enough. You must demonstrate a superior technical game against such a weakened opponent. We were unable to do that. We are not the best in the world anymore. It remains to be seen whether or not we win anything in China. We rested on our laurels after 1999 and we saw what happened. I think we are in no better shape now.

Sounds like this is your first time around. Girls at the age of 15 are still growing. By the time your tall, unskilled player starts to falter in soccer due to burn-out, the other girls will have reached their full height.
ODP coaches just want quick results, but they keep picking girls like yours and they add nothing to their game. It will show over time. Better hope a college gets interested in your daughter early. She'll have to commit early to capitalize on all that exposure. And better hope, that at a young age, she picks the college she'll still be interested in in her Senior year.

Actually, I think we do at the younger ages, yet I don't always think it is encouraged, so they end up trying to be the robots that we now have on the National Team.

If you saw the WC final and understood the game you would know that Brasil could have just as easily won the game. A missed PK and overall poor finishing didn't help Brasil in their quest for the trophy. Germany is another team that has technical ability and they won that game because they deserved to. Both of those teams are better technically than our team. I wish I could agree that we are number 1 but I can't ignore the facts. We play ugly soccer because we chose players who play ugly soccer. We certainly have creative players, what we lack is creative minded coaches.

and before the last WC the USMNT was ranked 5th in the world ....hahahahahahahaha We saw how accurate that was
I am quiet surprised at how naive many people are to how good the USA program is for women. This is one program unlike the USA men that gets it right. The womens program is consistently the best in the world. However that does not mean that other teams are not equally good or as talented. For some reason, people forget this is sports and you play the game to determine the outcome. Again, go check the stats, the USA women's national team have lost 1 game in the last three years. That's a stat that is pretty hard to find any negatives. :)
The US Womans team plays great relative to the rest of the world and has been great for decades. However relative to technical skills and any other skills relative to team play like passing, the men's soccer game is either way ahead becuase of the overall comptetition level or men's soccer has better coaching all around. At least thats what my 10 year old says when he watches the US team play...that the US woman's team does not pass as well as the boys when he watches them play. That does not mean that they are not great soccer players individually or great athletes in my opinion.

This is about the Women's game! Everyone knows that Men and Women are different. If they were not different they would play on the same team. Please stay out of this thread!

Thank you...Thank you...Thank you. Finally someone on this thread with intelligence. There are a few people who come on here and bash the U.S. WNT because their little girl did not make the cut in ODP. So now because little Susie did not make the cut, the whole U.S. system is "bad" and only caters to "big" girls. That is a load of crock of course. Did you see the U15 GNT and U17 GNT train and play games in Sunrise (at the hotel)? These were not big Abby Wambach like players. These were very skilled fast players (some tall, some average, some small). These players all came through the ODP system. I am not defending the ODP system, nor am I saying it is perfect. All I am saying is, on the girl's side, on the women's side, U.S. Soccer has done a pretty good job....for decades.
Our Women's team may not have looked pretty against Brazil but I've seen them play pretty soccer against many opponents. The most important thing for Coach Pia and the WNT was that they got the result against Brazil (with or without Marta, Daniella, and Christine). The team needed that boost of confidence especially after the World Cup result. The fact is great teams adjust, regroup, and taylor their formation and style of play to better deal with their opponents. So like it or not, the U.S. Women's National Team did just that against Brazil and they got the result. Yes, the U.S. WNT is still the best in the World for decades now!

Wambach's broken leg mars US win over Brazil
1 hour, 46 minutes ago
Buzz Up Print
SAN DIEGO (AP)-On a night when the United States woman should have been
eyeing the upcoming Olympics, they were dealt a crushing blow to their
gold medal hopes when Abby Wambach broke her left leg.
Wambach, the team's leading scorer, was carted off the field after a
violent collision in the first half of a 1-0 win over Brazil. Wambach is
expected to be out for 12 weeks and will miss the Olympics, which start
in three weeks.
Wambach fractured both her tibia and fibula and will have surgery
Thursday to have a titanium rod inserted into her leg.
"I want to thank all the fans, the doctors, the players on the team and
Tasha Kai for scoring the winning goal," Wambach said from the emergency
room. "Obviously, it's devastating, but above everything else, I'm only
one player, and you can never win a championship with just one player. I
have the utmost confidence in this team bringing home the gold."
Wambach is the team's leading scorer this year with 13 goals and 10
assists. She has led the team in scoring in the last three major
championships and is one of the top scorers in U.S. history with 99
goals in 127 games.
"I was very emotional," U.S. captain Lindsay Tarpley said of seeing
Wambach taken off the field. "She is one of my best friends."
The match, the Americans' final tuneup before they begin defense of
their Olympic title, was won on Natasha Kai's second-half goal. Kai
replaced Wambach on the field.
"My heart sank," Kai said. "We need her. She's a big piece of a great
team."
Wambach went down hard after a collision with Brazilian defender Andreia
Rosa. The players were going for the ball and both went down hard.
Wambach began signaling the sideline almost immediately for help. She
appeared to be in considerable pain as paramedics fit her with an
inflatable brace before carting her off the field after 6 minutes.
"We will miss her if she missed the Olympics," U.S. coach Pia Sundhage
said.
Andreia Rosa got up after a minute and continued in the game.
The U.S. opens its Olympics on Aug. 6 against Norway. That title defense
will now be much tougher.
"I'm excited to watch them and cheer them on during this challenge
they've been presented with," Wambach said. "It's really going to take
everyone coming together. I love them all so much, and appreciate so
many people involved with this game and the team.
"I put my heart and soul into this game every day, but sometimes
accidents happen. I've gotten so many calls already, and I just want to
say how much I appreciate that."
Wambach is seeking to become just the ninth female player to reach 100
goals and the fifth American. She is also one of the most experienced
U.S. players on a young squad.
Kai scored the only goal on a header in the 84th minute off a free kick
from Carli Lloyd.
The win raised the Americans' 2008 record to 21-0-1 and extended their
home unbeaten streak to 31. The U.S. team beat Brazil 1-0 on Sunday at
Commerce City, Colo. It was the fourth U.S. win in five matches by a 1-0
score.
Once again the U.S. Women showed why they are the Gold medal favorites. 1-0 over brazil but this time in more dominating fashion. Any comments bashers?
What was so dominating. A goal in the 85th minute? No gold.

It must be difficult to appreciate the game when you have no understanding of it. Unfortunately the US team looked just as dismal as they did three days ago against the same opponent. Brazil too looked poor in the final third. Keep in mind that many of the Brazil players who participated are not full NT members but rather U20 team members getting prepared for their own competitions. The US team is in no better hands now than they were with April H. Our girls have worked very hard but in the end do not possess the technical ability to be successful against the best teams. We have a very weak group at the Olympics which should help but in the end we will have to play against Germany or the full Brazil squad at some point and will be shown the door when we do. Pia decided to try and get the win last night in lieu of getting valuable training time for her subs. Big mistake going into a tournament this large without having quality minutes from all players. We need to revamp the team including a better coach.

Yes...let's get your little Ronaldinha on the team fast! And let's add you as the coach because with your guidance our players will make Cristiano Ronaldo look like a fat four-eyed rec player puffing on an inhaler.
What a bizare response to a well thought out post. It is very clear that our USWNT is struggling right now and that they do not play particularly attractive soccer. The players realize it as witnessed in Lloyd's halftime interview. The coach realizes it as witnessed in her post game interview. The Brazil roster was not their Olympic roster but our Olympic team was complete. We are not good in the final third because we lack the possession to be patient and allow opportunities to develop. I am not bashing our team simply stating the truth.

WRONG!!! It is a stupid post. Both teams struggled in the attacking third. The U.S. team's performance however was much improved over the last game. They lost Wamback in the 33rd minute otherwise this would have been a 4 or 5 zero game. The only players missing from the Brazil squad was Marta, Christine, and Daniella. Great players yes, and true they would have had a great affect on the game. However in MY opinion the result would not have been different. The U.S. would still pull out the win. Yes WIN...which is very important the last game leading up to the Olympics. Do you not think Brazil was trying to win? Coach PIA made all the right moves and got the result that will give the team...the whole team...the confidence they need going into the tournament. Imaging if they had lost....idiots like you would come on here and say crap like "They can't win without Wambach"... therefore the coach did the right thing for the team. Easy group or group of death you still have to WIN to be crowned Champion. Now the U.S. WNT may not be the best technically or they may not play the prettiest soccer, or they may have trouble in the offensive third, but the BOTTOM LINE is with all those inperfections they are still the BEST in the WORLD....PERIOD!!!! The fact that they are critical of themselves speaks to the inate nature of a true competitor...always wanting to be better and always wanting to improve. Like I said....let's visit this thread again after Bejing...and please no stupid group of death excuses or this one got hurt or red carded etc. Okay!

There is a very loud sect of Americans who can't stand criticism. This doesn't just have to do with sports. It has to do with politics too. Same mentality. They will never accept that they are not right 100% of the time and if they can't win their way, they'll blame everyone else for the failure.
Problem is, if you wrench the power away from them, they won't give you a free field to work in to make your case. You'll have to do it while they weigh you down.

Problem is, if you wrench the power away from them, they won't give you a free field to work in to make your case. You'll have to do it while they weigh you down.
Huh? Dude...go back to whatever backassward country you're from and kiss my red white and blue a$$!
"They lost Wamback in the 33rd minute otherwise this would have been a 4 or 5 zero game." quote
Are u serious....lol...that's funny. They might have beaten them that bad in the past but US will NEVER beat Brazil 4 or 5 zero again. And they better come up with someone to step in for Abby (which will be very difficult). Good time for a bencher to set up to the plate. We will revisit this after they meet in Beijing.
For the poster who thinks that the USWNT is the best team in the world, I say be objective. I want to see us win as much as you do, I just don't think that a 1-0 win over the Brazil B team is anything to crow about. I do not like the players selected nor how they play the game. Even when they understand and admit that they are playing too impatiently or playing over the midfield, they refuse to change tactics and play smarter soccer. Even the coach is displeased with the overall play. Seems like everyone sees it but the long ballers and kick and run fans. We do have the best funded program in the world. We should expect and demand better from our players and coaching staff. I hope that they turn it around before the Olympics or it will be ugly against Germany and Brazil.
Yes the technical skills are different but dont have to be. I am not talking about the physical differences. Both games should be pretty to watch. One looks more sloppy then the other and it has nothing to do with sex or speed but how soccer is played. The Woman seem to be taking advantage of their advanced athletic and indivudual type skills over the rest of the world. Sometimes patience in soccer is a beautiful thing to watch but you dont seem to know the difference. My 10 year old does.
"The only players missing from the Brazil squad was Marta, Christine, and Daniella. Great players yes, and true they would have had a great affect on the game. However in MY opinion the result would not have been different." quote
You are wrong. They are missing 7 top players from the world cup. Result would have been significantly different.

Save your breath. The poster you are responding to doesn't understand that we are falling fast and unless we begin to select players who can possess the ball and have the discipline to allow a build up to occur, we will continue to lose ground to the best teams in the world.

Yes...true...let's hurry up and select your daughter. She can't make the freaking ODP team but we'll put her short azz on the national team. I'll sign off for now but will be back to rub the gold medal in your stupid faces.
Yeah...and Abby's tall 5' 11" azz couldn't stand up to a shorter player. See ya in Beijing.

Thanks for making my point. See what I mean? You criticize them and they go running behind the flag, instead of taking the criticism on the chin.
How proud will you be to see Kai representing our flag at the Olympics as she flashes gangsta signs and wearing about 10 pounds of face jewelry? The kid is a circus sideshow with all the tats and piercings. Not to mention she isn't a very good player. The USSF has done a good job refocussing our men's program with the emphasis on development and are currently ignoring the women's side thinking that a simple coaching change would do the trick. Now our once dominant team beats "B" teams and countries we used to crush, 1-0. Because we get the result there is nothing to work on, right? USSF needs to wake up and get rid of Pia and restart our women's program before we get farther behind. We are in a weak group for China and should continue to beat the weak teams, but sooner or later we will have to play a good team and we will lose. Maybe then the USSF will wake up. It took them awhile to figure out what was wrong with April H. maybe they will recognize it sooner this time.

My God. If you're going to criticize a player or a program, do it based on their performance on the field, not on their life off the field. This is where inappropriate subjective decisions are entering into the picture. Don't think people aren't noticing whenever an ethnic player gets pushed aside in favor of players who are more "appealing" choices for reasons that have nothing to do with soccer.
Think of how foolish you all look when those players had all the advantages to succeed, and still didn't even make it through college. There are over 300 million people in America and probably a dozen different ways to play the game, yet we keep squeezing the players and programs through a narrow tunnel.
Nobody mentioned her ethnicity, except you!!! She's not a good player. She looks like a sideshow freak. Take the chip off of your shoulder. Name one player who was pushed aside in favor of another player based upon anything other than their performance. You just gotta blame somebody for your failures in life. There is nothing about this player that has any redeemable value. She is a thug, unskilled, and looks like a Carny. If you are a carny, then be proud.

She's part Hawaiian, Chinese and Filipino along with White. for God's sakes. How do you know that those tattoos weren't influenced by the area she grew up in where Samoans walk around with full body tattoos and nobody would think twice about it? Your appraisal of her is just horrible, especially in lieu of the fact that she scored the winning goal in the last game. That point, alone, completely blows your hate talk out of the water.
And WAKE UP. In soccer, politics reign supreme when it comes to selections. Everything is suspect.

The only thing suspect is your player evaluation. She scored a goal, big deal. If scoring a goal means that she is a good player, then conversely everyone else on the pitch must be a bad player, right? She grew up in Hawaii, not Samoa. I live for a time in Hawaii. The tatoos and all the metal in her face is not indicative of native Hawaiians or any Pacific Islander. She self mutilated on her own. Nobody cares what you think. Truth is that she will go to China and with any luck she nor Solo will do anything else to shame the program and then afterwards maybe we can get the program back on track before the next World Cup. So cheer on the Sunday comics and the kids that look like they were dragged along the hardware store floor next month, they will need you. Fortunately noone else does.

First of all, "pitch" is an English term, not an American one, therefore, I wonder if you're even qualified to make any appraisals on what an American player should look like off the field. Second, I also question if you ever lived in Hawaii since it is composed of very diverse, cultural mixes. Samoans would have been one of many ethnic groups which settled in the area, along with other Polynesian cultures which are known to accept tattoos, much more readily than you appear to. And in the end game, her tattoos and what you think of them is a non sequitur since it has no place in this conversation and is just a reflection of your judgmental bias. And it is your bias that nobody should care about. What does it say about your life if you feel you have to trash a player's appearance, just to make yourself feel self-important? Does it make you feel like the big Kahuna, eh? So sad, really.
FANTASTIC argument, please, keep it up...

"Pitch" is the term the world outside our borders uses for what you refer to as a soccer field. Try to engage yourself into the idea that this game is played outside of the USA. As far as the player in question goes, continue to sing her praises if you must. My assessment of the team and their shortcomings stand. The world has proven that direct play no longer is effective. Even the Germans play a possession style game now. Heck, even Norway plays better possession than we are demanding from our team. I feel that we have not chosen the right direction and this is being borne out in the results of their matches. We will see who is correct within the next month. As for your geneological rantings, there is not place in the world for the type of stereotypical racism you extoll. If diversity were important to you, you would not insult the entire Hawaiian culture with your ethnically insensitive depictions of the peoples of the region. It is clear to all that you are using the argument of "culture" to camoflage personal choice. You need to tune out MAURY and JERRY, and tune into the real world. Just don't be surprised when as you are doing the carny circuit next year you see her right next to the bearded lady, sitting in her booth eating a live trout.

Don't change the dialogue. Your response is loaded with strawman arguments. First, it doesn't matter what the world calls the soccer field, the point is that, "pitch" is not a term commonly used in America. Secondly, the whole world doesn't call the soccer field, the pitch, because the whole world doesn't speak English. What, do they say, "El Pitcho" en latino america? I think not. And since Latin America is considered outside the USA, you falter in that argument, as well.
You put your own integrity in question when you used an incredibly subjective, biased opinion of a player's appearance. In doing so, every other assessment you made about the player seemed equally frivolous. But I am not an unkind person. If you want to hold your opinion of her performance on the field, it is duly noted. Perhaps if you had kept your argument to that point, as you expressed it above, i.e. the straight forward game versus possession, you might have found support from unexpected sources.
But you didn't. This is all about you getting bothered about her appearance. i.e. her tattoos. You have already exposed yourself as someone who is incredibly ignorant about Hawaii and its culture. It is diverse in a way which you can't possibly comprehend or you wouldn't be making such insular comments about what would insult the entire Hawaiian culture and what wouldn't. For starters, the player wears on her arm a Polynesian designed tattoo, and would it surprise you to learn that her father was employed in the Polynesian Culture Center in Oahu? You know the Polynesian Culture Center in Oahu, don't you? Anyone who visits Hawaii who actually wants to learn about the culture, will spend a day there learning about its fascinating history. There is a reason why it's called the Polynesian Culture Center and not the Hawaiian Culture Center. Its because Hawaii embraces its diversity in a way that all Americans could stand to learn from.
From the post-match quote sheet after the first match with Brazil
U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage
On her insisting the team sticks to its ball-possession style:
“I think they have done great because it is such a short amount of time. I’ve been here for eight months or something like that and it usually takes two years, so I am very impressed with the way they try to play the kind of soccer, the philosophy I have. But you can see sometimes they get a little bit stressed. I think that sometimes they underestimate their quality because they really could keep the ball more often, and then play from the back. That’s my job, to make sure with my body language and tell them you are good enough to do it and you should dictate the tempo, and not the opponents.”

Thank you. Good information. It does take longer for a team to gel, using possession style tactics, but it is rewarding when it happens. Sounds like Pia understands what is involved for a player and a to make the transition.
To the bitter racist idiot who attacked Natasha Kai:
Hey Dummy, Natashai Kai is better than your half-pint-no-odp-making-got-droped-early-every-year daughter. Don't worry, you'll get to spend a lot of money again next year only to have her not make the cut. Meanwhile you can sit on your fat butt at home and root for Natasha and the U.S. Women's National Team as the win gold in China!!!

She looks like a great role model for our daughters!!
Sorry, I have been away all day getting the Battle of Gettysburg tatooed on my daughter. I have a good payment plan and if I can get a Christmas bonus this year I can get it colored in as well. I think I can put all of the extra holes in her face at home, so I can save a little tatoo money there. Well it's off to the soccer store to buy two different color boots to complete the sideshow look that is taking the nation by storm. I am glad that you find Kai an attractive role model for your kid. I will certainly look for you this season and maybe our kids can get together and take a tour of the Big Top.

She isn't afraid to be an individual in a country that has been using fear and ridicule to try to get everyone to submissively go along with bad policy ideas. I say, we need more individual thinkers like her. I'm sorry you are very susceptible to suggestion and feel you should bully your daughter into being a follower, instead of allowing her to think for herself. Maybe you're the one who is more bothered by this than she is?

I find your comment amusing, considering the number of times you have been found incorrect in your assessments. Well, I would be amused, if I didn't have a pretty good idea what drives you.
What drives me? You mean like a chauffeur? I assess players based upon many factors. I do not base my opinion of players soley on whether or not they scored a goal, like you apparently do. There are so many other facets to the game that you miss when you only look at offensive statistics. Your thinking process outs you as a simpleton when the topic is soccer and a malcontent when it comes to life in general. The problems that the team is having now are similar to the problems the team had under GR. They elected to solve those problems with Pia. It just wasn't enough change. If we are to regain our position as the best team in the world we need to revamp the program. You will see what I mean at the Olympics.

Now, how difficult was it to express yourself without the incendiary subjective opinion of the player's appearance? Not so hard, was it? It will always be your option to continue bringing it into the discussion but you will probably get the same reaction, or worse, people will just ignore you completely.
Now that we're down to the basic core of your argument, firstly, the player you malign also had other moments in other games. It wasn't just one goal, which suggests she is no flash in the pan. Based on your word selections in previous posts, it is my opinion you judge her harshly.
Also, until this year, our daughters have been trained and selected based on the straight ball game. "College ball" is what they use to refer to it. For Kai's generation it is a question of relearning how to play the game, so there will be a learning curve. I have seen teams make these adjustments and it doesn't happen overnight. Sometimes, it won't happen at all because of the input from impatient onlookers who discourage trainers, clubs and sponsors. The way the game is played in America is evolving as we speak. Ironically, I have seen girls who once played in Clubs which had big money and that pushed the straight ball game, lose complete interest in playing for the Club at the semi-pro level. We're talking about acclaimed players in the area and they walked away. The Club had to put out inducements to draw players to form a semi-pro team, and it was comical, because almost every girl who responded came from a Club which had specialized in possession ball and from a coach who had to endure tremendous criticism because possession ball is hard to train when parents and other Club teams are always emphasizing wins. So in summary, if you pretend to know so much about soccer, then realize that it will take time to make the transition to possession soccer, because in several states, possession soccer was not what the ODP development was teaching. Have patience. If we start thinking long-term. We'll get better results.
How much time do they really need? I think Herb Brooks proved that it can be done in as little as 7 months if you are willing to commit to a paradigm shift of the program. Follow the lead of those who have done it like Dorrance and Brooks and stop making excuses for a failed theology. I gotta go get a funnel cake now and maybe one of those sausages on a stick before the line at the tilt-a-whirl gets too long.

Herb Brooks the hockey coach? You're comparing hockey to soccer? Aren't the skills needed for each sport vastly different, and that's the issue we're facing with soccer. The paradigm shift involves both, advanced development of INDIVIDUAL skills, as well as team tactics. And the goal is to win more than once.
Besides, wasn't hockey more established in the USA back then, than soccer is today?
And Dorrance the North Carolina coach? Aren't we trying to move away from his college ball style of game?
It just seems to me that you're grasping for examples from within a very limited sphere of knowledge. I would say that now that we're changing our style of game, it will be at least two to three years before we begin to see consistent results. Maybe you should stick to Wrestle mania where someone in the ring always knows exactly who will win. That might be a sport you're better suited for.

Wow, did you miss the point. Both coaches scuttled existing teams to institute completely different systems of play. Both were enormously successful. Do a little research regarding a topic prior to responding to it so that you may at least appear informed. Almost everything you wrote is patently incorrect. Not because you are untruthful, just because you are uninformed. You want to pick a fight with someone you don't even know. I am simply illustrating by belief that is in contradiction to yours. My opinion is based upon my experiences which are no doubt different than yours. The coaches mentioned were used as a metaphor for change. Both were ridiculed for cutting experienced, good players in favor of the right kind of player. We have those players now. We just need to brave enough to select them. While enjoy sparring with you, I will bet in the end we are not that far apart. Methodology would no doubt be 180 degrees different, but the result would probably be close. I was fortunate enough to play for 9 years in Europe before injury forced retirement. I have one playing over there now and with any luck another on the way in a few years. I do know what it takes and I do believe that girls can play the same technical style as boys if they knew that it was their only option. We have very technical players already in the pool, but who rarely play. Not enough of them, but we do have some. We have many more who are overlooked by D1 direct coaches who only strive to keep up the status quo and that is killing our program.
What exactly are te coaches looking for in the girls. My daughter is a rising u14 who is a very talented player with excellent 1v1 skills. She's not very tall and I was told not to even bother and to wait another year for her growth spurt to hit. Of the girls on our club that did try out, the only one who got selected was the probably our worst player. She is however very tall and aggressive. Not real fast or skilled. Just curious.

Try out for ODP? Well, someone else might come along with a better answer. Every ODP year has a different set of coaches. Some coaches select for skill (these are the good ones), others rely on just hustle and physical play and height, especially in defense. The coaches for the latter hardly ever win games in ODP, but their coaching style might win them acclaim in high school where they get results, which is why they're still around. If that's what you're stuck with at your daughter's age and you feel your daughter can't overcome the coach's prejudice for height, you could try something very drastic, but wait until she gets older when you're sure she's a stand out. Take her up to North Carolina or some other choice college state and try out there. It has been done before. She'll get seen by college scouts and you'll find out if she's as good as her peer group.
How much time do they really need? I think Herb Brooks proved that it can be done in as little as 7 months if you are willing to commit to a paradigm shift of the program. Follow the lead of those who have done it like Dorrance and Brooks and stop making excuses for a failed theology. Your point was not missed. You used an excessively broad metaphor, and I would like to believe that we are beyond speaking in a broad sense at this point since we've been talking about the transition from one style of game to the other since forever. There's nothing new there.
I don't doubt that there are good technical players out there, and I don't doubt that there are many technical players who are overlooked, but many of these problems start in the younger years during the early selection process of ODP. The main problem is that you don't have enough ODP coaches who can train for possession, but they have the political connections to hold the spots and take control of the program. That's where you should be directing your ire.
And I think what you want is a bit too impatient for the reasons I have already discussed in the last post.

Who told you to wait another year? Was it an ODP coach or someone else? At the state level coaches seem to look for athletes. It is unfortunate that this happens, but it seems to. Most of the state level ODP people are unqualified volunteers for the mostpart. They look for players like they have at their particular club. Oftentimes these coaches were players who were not properly developed themselves and wind up perpetuating the model of athlete first, footballer second. I can tell you that this is changing at the Regional and National level. Hopefully you will not listen to these people next year and allow your daughter to give it a try.

I agree with you. It begins at the club level, extends to ODP and beyond. Most trainers and coaches are browbeat into winning in lieu of technical development at the early ages so they just skip past the hard stuff and move onto what will help them win. Its sort of like the worst form of natural selection. The win first environment makes parents impatient and coaches uneasy. Having said all of this I do believe that there are enough qualified coaches and trainers (and motivated kids) to field quality teams made up of quality players at all of our USWNT youth teams. I do believe that. It would take someone like the previously mentioned coaches (not them, someone like them) brave enough to scrap the current team and start over. I think we will use the "no Abby excuse" when we fail to win gold at the Olympics so I doubt the USSF will see it right now, but they will as we continue to finish second or third in the WC. I don't like agreeing with you.
I don't like agreeing with you.
LOL! I won't tell anyone, if you don't.

I was told that by parents who have previously participated in the ODP program. It seemed to have played out as they said it would based on who they selected for the pool. Guess we'll give it a shot nextt year.
This year there seemed to be a drift, I wont say move, toward the technical side of things with less emphasis placed upon athleticism than usual. Don't know whether that is because of the people involved this year or the players or what. I can't say that it will coninue, but that is what we saw at the state and regional level anyway. Hope it will continue.

Being on a good team vs. individual development
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All,
Here's a situation I'd like to get some feedback on.
My U17 daughter is in a small, start-up soccer club that has struggled to attract quality players at her level.
The coach/trainer of our little club is outstanding, and my daughter's individual progress in the last year has been tremendous. She's got unbeatable skills. So, we're reluctant to leave, given her great individual development.
However, with a few exceptions, her teammates (and more importanly, her teammates' parents) are not as committed to the team as we are.
As a result, the team is not very good.
So, my question is: At what age does a player need to start playing on a good team to continue her development?
Thanks!

Does your daughter want to play in college? If so, at her age she should be on a team which is committed to playing in showcases. Doesn't have to be the best team, but it does have to be the best team that will allow her to showcase by giving her time on the field. Otherwise, if all you want her to do is develop skills and you're happy with the coach/trainer, stay on that team. She'll probably develop skills faster if she's allowed to hold onto the ball to make things happen.

That is a very good question, It is my understanding the four components of player development are generally characterized as: technical, tactical, physical, and mental. It sounds like your daughter has developed well technically. However, at some point, her tactical development will need to be addressed. Tactical play is defined by USSF as play above the 1 v 1 level, including small group tactics such as 2 v 1, and large group tactics such as 5 v 5, 11 v 11 etc. IMO, one area our players tend to be weak in is our tactical understanding of the game especially our player’s positioning relative to other players on the field and the ball. When I see kids from other countries play, they seem to more naturally get into good positions on the field.
If your daughter is playing on a team where the players are always in bad positions, she will not be able to easily learn proper positioning because generally, a player’s positioning is based upon her relative position to her teammates, for example, is she the 1st attacker, 2nd attacker, 3rd attacker, etc. I hate to see a youth player make a great play with the ball, pass it in order to move into a better position on the attack, and never get a return pass because their teammate can’t see the game at the same level they do, or lacks the technical skill to get her the ball back. Conversely, it is a beautiful thing to see good players moving and playing together and playing off each other. But if you are moving your kid to a new team to improve her tactical development, make sure the new team plays at a high tactical level, that is, not a run-and-kick team.
However, as you know, it is a balancing act. Given her current environment, the individual attention and confidence she has received may perhaps be more important to her future development.

my experience with my youngest daughter was very similiar to what you have expressed. The only difference was we specifically chose to move her from a top level U11 team to a team of mixed age and ability to have her coached by an incredible coach who knew exactly what he was doing and was focused on individual development. Now entering her U16 year, that decision has not held her back as she currently plays on a Regionally competitive team, but IMO her ability to compete at this level is very much due to the training she got as a U11. I don't believe she would have developed the same way had she remained with the other team.
The other team was comprised of very good athletes. There was a great deal of size, speed and aggression on that team. When the team was put together a good portion of them came to the team with better than average skill for their age, my daughter among them, but the training they continued to receive once on the team did not focus on the same intense skill building that the other team was getting. Training was designed to win the next game, not develop the individual player, and win they did, but size, speed and aggression had a lot to do with those wins. My daughter had the speed, but lacked the size and isn't to this day particularly aggressive in nature, so for her continuing her skills development was particularly important if she was going to compete at a high level.
At U13 we moved to a higher level team with the thought that it was now time for her tactical education, but once again our decision was based on coaching. We have made a very good choice as, although she has grown a great deal, she's still seems one of the smallest kids competing at this level. So now not only is being technically proficient essential, understanding the tactical game is important if she is to maintain her ability to compete at this level.
What I hope you will take from my experience is to consider your daughter's strengths and weaknesses in determining what team will benefit her most. At U11 and U12 many of the top teams are top teams because they have the best athletes not the best training. All the other parts of becoming a good soccer player on a good team can be postponed until later, but that individual development that kids have to get before puberty can not. Kids who are super athletes can get away with not having it, because their athleticism will carry them, but for everyone else, I think you have to consider the club that promotes individual development as being the best place to be, whether that's at the big name club or a smaller club.

Time for Tony D. to make a return to the women's side.
Instead of going through every coach, why don't we take a look at some of our worthless players!!! Why can't this team and some of the players be switched up? We are so slow and boring. If Mitts played one more long ball to no one, and our two center mids didn't find each other one time! Our defense is so questionable. Kai can't shine at all without Wambach up there taking all the heat. We did have one player, Heather O, who used to be somewhat exciting to watch until the US got a hold of her and took all of her "take it at em" mentality away, now she's just another product of the boring United States soccer program! All the women on the other team know how to attack. Some of our girls were lucky to trap it right at times!

Is he the coach who lost WITH Wambaugh on the field?

While I'm not a fan of Hope's big mouth, the one goal was really because of a terrible pass back on our defense. That was a terrible mistake! The women's team is terrible, that's all there is to it.

Hey ninja, if you are a guy I have some bad news for you....... The US lost as predicted because we lost our only real talent in Wambach. The coach doesn't play the other talented player, Wagner, and has selected a bunch of kickball players. It doesn't work. We will go through and probably play Germany in the next round and get stomped. Revamp the team and the selection process and find players who can play with skill and get rid of Kai and the rest of the WNBAesque players like Solo and return us to a winning tradition. We sure miss Hamm and Akers.

I thought that this new coach was going to emphasize ball control to take advantage of these talented midfielders that the U.S. is supposed to have. Watching that mess against Norway, you would think that the object of the game is to boot long passes over the endlines and sidelines. And I have never seen so many technical errors on defense for a team that is supposed to be talented. But dwelling on the past is not going to help. The era of Hamm and Akers was enjoyable to watch, but the world stage was a lot less competitive. I agree that the team needs to be revamped, but the problems run a lot deeper than just changing the current players. The whole U.S. development system needs to change from the ground up.
I would have to agree with the above post that the system as a whole needs to be revamped. I think that it is a stretch to believe that what we are currently fielding are the "cream of the crop" from our developmental program. After watching the Norway game I am convinced that we need a tougher group of defenders that would set the tempo for the Mid and up top players to feed off of. The current group we have will never make any attacking player feel that they can't score.
I agree with the defenders not being up to par- I think too many times the kids coming out of the US Camps are all originally strikers that are now having to play defense. Normally the really strong defenders get overlooked because they aren't the flashy players. We see this time and time again in even state ODP at every age. Since when has a defensive player even captured "America's Heart" so to speak?- we are all caught up in who can score. Until we move from that mindset and start focusing on extremely strong backs the rest of the world will pass us by if they haven't already done so.

You're right. They get all a dither about the attacking defender. Over here in high school, it's the latest thing and a player that can come from behind to score in even one game -- even an easy game, can suddenly become a superstar if the coach wants to promote her skills. Never mind that the kid hates to play defense, and because of that lack of commitment, you don't ever see that 6th sense develop where they sharply anticipate where to intercept the ball, the way you do see it in a good, dedicated defender. Sometimes they put back there forwards that don't have the best offensive skills, so the kid can run forward, but their footskills will always be so-so.
I value defenders more than scorers and I would say i am in the minority. We are still playing old european direct soccer and it does not work, we should be teaching posession and moving the ball throught the defending third with simple possesion not balls over the top. Defenders are looked at as second class citizens whose only goal in life is to clear to the monster up front, this mindset is the downfall of US soccer.
What we need is to seek out creative skilled players and bring them into the program as a priority. We got outplayed by Japan again today and were fortunate to have won. Had they finished their opportunities we would have lost that game as well. We have no distribution from the hacks in the center and our backs are suspect as well. Come on USA get with it and get rid of Pia.
I must say that the US women are much knider on the eyes than the Brazilian behemoths.

Yes, bring back Tony D.!

I only wish their football was pretty as well. While the team may have personal beauty they play an ugly game compared to Brasil, Germany, Japan, or N. Korea. Maybe if they give points for makeup instead of for winning football our girls can get a medal.

while we have Cox in the back, we really shouldn't talk about what the other teams girls look like. She may have them all topped - ugly! Mitts is pretty, but they need to get rid of her, whenever the camera is on her she always looks confused, even on a throw in. The girl can't complete a pass. The whole team needs replaced.
What I do not get, is that at any point in the game you could count how many times the US team booted the ball up the field directly to the opposing team. My guess is that 9 out of 10 boots go awry. The US team seem to have foot skills, and some spped, but their passing on the ground must be bad, since they continuely try to connect in the air, which they almost never do. Do not even get me started on their finishing. They will not be long in this olympics if they continue on this game plan.
Looks like US will finish second group G. Means they'll play winner of Group F. Either Brazil or Germany. May be a short stay in China if they don't start playing better
REVAMPED???? That has not started yet as far as I can tell. My daughter was told at region 3 camp this year that she is too flashy and skilled for the regional team and not physical enough???? Coach told her she plays more like a Brazilian than an American?????? She responded she plays like a soccer player. She told him that until they change from athletes to real soccer players, the uswnt will continue to get beat. His response was that they have been the best in the world for many years choosing the players they have been choosing and it was not going to change.

I can imagine why it's shocking for some that high up to accept the change. Can you imagine how many coaches would be out of a job?
But it would be good news for those coaches who do have skills to teach their players, if the parents and players are patient. The problem will be that they will always be coming up against the coaches that know that the key is to disrupt the game by physically disrupting the passing.
Don't worry. Once the USA starts falling into a losing streak, people will wake up and figure it out.

I don't know about us being the best, but we are without a doubt the most boring to watch. Big, most of them slow, no real skill unless kicking it hard is skill now. The US goes for the biggest players without skill and the whole game we chase the ball around teams that are smaller and know how to keep the ball on the ground, and move out of trouble. Mitts can't even keep the ball on the field. If she does it's always to the other team.
I can see them thinking some kids need to be more physical, but I've never heard them say too flashy. Unless your kid has no clue at all when to get rid of the ball. I hate American soccer and I'm all for creativity, but I also see some who never know when to play a simple pass, everything has to be ole. That's not good either.

That is hilarious! I guess the coach missed seeing last year's World Cup! The U.S. "has been the best" (emphasis on the past) when the women of other countries did not play the sport or were just starting out. Of course, they were the best. Now that the programs of other countries have expanded, the U.S. is falling further and further behind. Unless ... maybe they know something we don't ... like new rules that will give a goal to a team for every time the team kicks a long pass to the other team. Then the U.S. would dominate.

Guess your daughter is not going to be getting a call anytime soon, huh? My guess is your daughter hogged the ball (what she calls flashy) and then got knocked over a lot (not physical enough). But the biggest mistake was to talk to the coach like that. Shows she was not willing to learn new things. Strike three, she's out.

Good point. To qualify for the U.S. National Team, she needs to learn how to: (1) kick long passes to the other team or out of bounds on a regular basis; (2) stand around and watch opposing players attack the U.S. goal unmarked; (3) fire hard shots that are way off target; (4) suppress any type of creativity with the ball; and (5) make poor decisions (particularly if she is a goalkeeper). If she brings her game up to the level of these standards, she should have success in making the National Team. Otherwise, she has no chance. Good luck!

The post above is a complete bogus and a lie. The poster is trying to stir up more trouble and bash the ODP system. Hey we all know the system is far from perfect, we all know the Brazilians produce more creative players, we all know the rest of the world has effectively caught up to the U.S. Women, we all know that ODP coaches tend to select size and speed over technique, we all know that has to change. However, for you to come on here and lie about how flashy your daughter is and how she was compared to the Brazilians is simply pathetic!!! Now I know you're from Florida...do you care to say what is your daughter's birth year? I don't recall any Brazil-Like Floridians at the Alabama Camp... But please...give us some clues....LIAR!!!

Did you hear that GBII refused to attend the woman's soccer games? He said he was protesting because he heard the Americans would only be allowed eleven players on the field, and the other team would get brazilians.

SPOILER ALERT: What I saw against the game with New Zealand, was that even though we were ahead, players in the back were still trying to boot it up to the forwards even when there was an open midfielder twenty feet away; and one time, a player who was front center almost lost the ball with three defenders in front of her, and when she regained control of the ball, instead of passing it to Lloyd who was standing just a little bit to the side and behind her, the girl turned around and dribbled back into traffic. We lost the ball. Lloyd was bewildered. So was I.
Our team no longer has the possession and distribution appraoch. Is it a reflection of our players, the coach, our system? Has Europe moved past us because their programs focus on youth development. We choose HP.

First I never said we were from Florida! I will tell you the age 91 girls and the team is North Carolina. I will also tell you the Coach smart azz. Her name was Julie. The male coach's name I cant remember. By flashy she meant she does too many "moves" that the coach thought was not necessary when you could just hit the ball up the field and let the forwards run onto them. Said it was not necessary to beat players with skill moves aka Brazil when you can pound the ball aka USA. And btw, she had the most assists because she has always been taught the assist is the hardest part of a goal. And as far as being physical the coach was not talking about being knocked off the ball or vice versa she was talking about size as in physical size. My kid is only 5' 4" and 114 pounds. Keep trying to discredit this though its fun making you look like a donkey.

They've told my kid the same thing about "moves" at ODP. Don't worry though because the very next year the coach for her new age group loved how she could hold onto the ball and not just kick the crap out of it. Some coaches will love her ability to hold the ball. They may encourage her to do it more in the final third, but they still like it. We've also heard the same thing about size because for some reason the US likes you to be big with the ability to kick it far.

If this is the type of football that our USSF thinks that we should be playing then why even bother with participating in the ODP program? I wouldn't want to be associated with this style of play. There are wonderfully talented players who apparently can make it to Region Pools and even National trials but if they are selecting players like Lloyd, Boxx and Kai, what is the point? I just don't get why with all of the money we put in as a country to this program why we are still seeing the same old results. We are probably going to figure into the medal round due to the way the brackets fall since we don't have to play Norway, Germany, or Brazil in the next round but you can't be happy with what you are seeing.

Actually, I liked that she put some of the younger ones in yesterday. As far as Kai, notice she had her chance to start and blew it and has not started the next two games. The coach has had what, six months? And to bring in an entire new team right before the Olympics would not have worked either. I would concentrate more on the U20 World Cup team and see how they do. My guess is that is the age group they are grooming for the next National World Cup. Let these other ones go play in the new professional league and then hang up their cleats.
I understand your point about not trying to bring in a whole new team but watching grown professional players who cannot string together passes is frustrating. Backs who can't find midfielders feet. Midfielders who can't play simple balls. It's just hard to watch. Are we even looking for players who can pass and recieve? I think that Arod has done an excellent job thus far and am amazed that she can play as a target at 5'4". Maybe she is a start.
USA vs Canada: first twenty minutes
USA is beginning to show it has a possession game. Players are beginning to look less wooden and a bit more comfortable making moves defensively and connecting passes offensively. First five minutes were rough, but as the game progressed they settled down, showing less and less regression to college soccer. There is one forward who should have finished more than she has. They're playing in full rain and thundering in the background. Game suspended at 20 minutes so they switched to Brazil vs. Norway game.

And just to note, the second Brazil goal was off a "long" ball from the back that the defender tried to pass back to the goalie, only to have Marta "run onto it" and score. I don't like it, but it is done with every team. The difference is having someone who can make things happen.

While Brazil's field players are far superior to ours they must have a better backup goalkeeper than Barbara. She was horrible the entire time she was on the field and you just knew she was going to do something to give up a goal to Norway. If the US can manage a win against Canada we should make the final as our bracket is much easier than the other bracket.

The last time I checked the team's performance, the US women's team has lost 2 games in three years. Yes, they are really falling way behind the rest of the world.!!! Did you ever think that the other countries are getting better??

Yes. On this forum they did understand that the other countries were getting better. No state has more parents who better understands that the future of the game is in possession style soccer because we've been stuck for too long with coaches who haven't understood that the game they played back in college is no longer enough to get the kids beyond U11, if the kids really want a chance at the big show. You have to understand that Florida's soccer program is a disgrace. We have some bright spots in the state who do get it, who understood years ago that the game was going in the direction of skills and technical game over the athleticism. But most of us had to endure years of paying good ole boy type coaches who promised connections to their alma maters and who burned out the kids early because their game style was all about maximizing the kid's athleticism to out last the other team in the second half.
So, if the US Women's Soccer team wants to lead the way for all the ODP programs in the nation, I say, let the transition begin.

I guess it would depend upon what your definition of possession is. I did not see us possess the ball very well at all. Our midfield is the weakest it has been since the formation of the team in 1991. We managed to beat a Canada team in OT and make it to a medal round. For the number 1 ranked team in the world this should be expected don't you think? You should see some good possession in our next game as Japan does a decent job at moving the ball.
What we are seeing with the Women's National Team is a result of the National Federation. They put their entire emphasis on technical training void of free play wich which is where tactical development occurs. Do not misunderstand, I know how important the technical aspect of the game is ,especially at the young ages. I just believe that too many coaches are taught to micromanage every aspect of the player, destroying creativity and not allowing the players to think for themselves. We have these highly skilled players that have no clue where to put the ball or how to run off the ball. We have great players that just boot the ball when they are put under pressure. Not that they do not have the ability to hang on to it, but because they either do not know where to look for support, or because the support isn't there, or arrives too late. So rather than lose the ball, they just get rid of it. You see this every weekend no matter where you play, because of the emphasis on the physical aspect of the game.
Give Pia a chance. She is saying all the right things and wants to play the style we used to play. It will take a while to get there. The Women showed that they are capable of playing possession style soccer today before the rain delay..............now they have to be able to do it for 90 minutes.
Personally I would like to see Amy, Kai and Lindsey all in together. Their speed and creativity could be very exciting to watch. Lindsey is the closest we've had to Mia. Amy and Kai remind me of Tiffany Millbrett and Shannon McMillan..................remember all the excitement they provided.
I too am frustrated with what I have seen since Tony Dicicco left, but I think that at least at National Team level we are heading in th right direction. Hopefully that will trickle down to the Youth level.

This is a question of watching the same game and deciding if the glass was half full, or half empty. Yes, there was some of the old style of playing, but there were lots of spurts of brilliance out there that showed they were moving towards possession soccer. Frankly, I was more disappointed in the number of times they didn't finish. If they can play the same game but actually convert those shots into goals, I think they'll make it through to the next level.
What I see is a team of marginal individual defenders doing a good job of playing high pressure on opponents. The work very hard defensively and seem to be in a hurry when they transition into offense. They seem to rush the attack instead of taking their time to see what opens up and then capitalizing on what transpires. They only have one hectic speed. I like the high pressure defense. They just need to learn to slow down the attack unless an immediate counter is on. We could use a true playmaker in the midfield to help out service to our wingers who do a great job at getting forward and I think our forwards (even Kai who I think is awful) do a good job holding and playing back into the midfield. Our defenders are not good individual defenders but do a good job at team defending. If they get isolated 1v1 they usually get cooked. Our midfielders would probably do a better job at possession if they would just slow it down a notch and not try to do too much in a single pass. Playing simple is something they don't do well. I do agree that they need some personnel changes and that they are hard to watch.
2007 Women's World Cup- semi finalists- 3rd place winner. World Cup is all that counts.

The World Cup game you reference was 2-0. Hardly being creamed. Marta misses a penalty or it would have been 2-1. Nobody said that the Germans were unskilled. Quite to the contrary, they are indeed very skilled and have a much better tactical understanding than we do. The fact that they are a big team does not automatically make them unskilled. We have big unskilled players but it is not due to their size, it is how they have been trained. Fast forward to today's Brazil- Germany match and now you may use the word "creamed". Brazil outplayed the Germans for the entire 90 minutes with the only German goal coming as a result of a Brazillian error. I don't know who will win the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, but I do know who has the best team and best players....Brazil.
2007 Women's World Cup- semi finalists- 3rd place winner. World Cup is all that counts.
...and didn't the minature super skilled Brazil team get creamed by the big unskilled Germans...hmmm....
USA and our big girls...still number 1
hmmmmmm...Size couldn't help the Germans today. And it won't help the US Thursday either. The Brazillian players will have to do something really stupid to lose this game. I used to call my girl little MIA. Now i call her..LITTLE MARTA. Bring home the gold baby.
Yeah...but your pathetic kick baller will never be Mia and she'll never be Marta. Maybe she can be a Maria and make up a few bed at the Motel 6.[/quote]
dude. It was intended to be a joke. You just showed yourself up to be a pathetic racist pig.
BTW - if you want i can find a Maria to make up the beds and clean the mess (at the Motel 6) your little one leaves after she gets pimped out. Better yet...send her to Sau Paulo. BRAAAAAZILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL LLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
The big unskilled U.S Women will beat the tiny skilled samba Brazilians and take home the gold. It won't be a pretty win but a win none the less for Team U.S.A. The Brazilian women, like their men, will get to go home and say how they played the most skillful and entertaining soccer. We will all sing the praises of Marta, Danielle, Formiga, Ronaldinho, Diego, Marcelo as we hang our gold medal over the fire place. You will get to continue your bitter discontent with our ODP system while my big unskilled daughter gets invited to all the regional and national camps. Your little skilled marta will get to win league games and league titles only to have my daughter's big team run over her at State Cup. Awe well...such is life...

This is about our country. Not about you and your daughter. Even members of the US women's soccer team knows that possession is the future of the sport.
Too much HP on our team. Europe and Brazil's youth programs for girls have caught us. Bring skill back. Hamm, Foudy, Akers etal could score. Now we "dump and run" to HP.

HP? Sorry, I can't figure it out.
US vs Brazil game in overtime! US played a phenomenal defensive game and came up with some of the best offensive plays in the last five minutes. But Dona Barbara is proving to be a better goalie than most people said she would be. Game is on Telemundo.
Game is on USA for those of you who hold a green card

Racist. The USA is diverse. If you can't figure that out by now, you will in forty years.

Why is womens soccer SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO boring? This was supposed to be a great match-up but all I saw was a bunch of "kick first, think later" players. Marta should quit womens soccer and play in the MLS because she just made the US defenders look like big stinkin piles of poo poo.
One positive was that Hope Solo showed that former Coach ***edited***thought he was bigger than the team when he tried to flex his ***edited*** muscles when he benched her and got rocked by Brazil 4-0.
Congratulations ladies. Even though I as I watched I was wishing there was some televised Water Polo or something with some more action.
Moderator note: I have edited your post for offensive content, please use better judgement in the future.
I respect the Brazilian ladies to no end. My favorites are Cristiana, Daniela, Marta, Formiga. But, to show you how much the rest of the team stands out, I can name them by sight after only watching closely in the last three games.
Lloyd, from the USA, what can I say? I spotted her in the earlier games. There was something about her that stood out and I'm glad to see my hunch was right. I kept talking about her to my hubbie and in the end I was babbling, "Didn't I say there was something special about Lloyd? Didn't I? Didn't?" "You did."
What was the score?!?!?!?!

Whoops! She scored in the first few minutes of the first fifteen minute half (90ish minutes). But they still had to play a second fifteen minutes, where no one scored.
Can they go back to wearing those "bronze"....er..."gold" jerseys again :smt003
They sure looked "bronze" after the 2007 world cup!
Marta, Danielle, Cristiane are talented players...I would say they are the best in the world. However, the USWNT is the best team. What else can they do to prove this point? They play with such heart and grit and they do what is most important at the higest level....they win! That's right...at the highest level it's not how pretty you play, it's how effective you are, and it's can you get the result whenit counts. Congratulations to both teams. The US Women's Program is still the best in the world...I don't care who is catching up....they still have to catch up.

They were totally outplayed in the final, the ball must have been in the USA end 90%+ of the game. Brazil's players were faster, more creative, and more skilled.
Brazil had so many more quality chances than the US, it was ridiculous.
The US team was lucky that Brazil picked this particular game to be unable to find the net. In Brazil I'd bet they are talking about how their team choked rather than how they got beat by a better team.

I agree with you. The US did play a great defensive game, seemed to know where the Brazilians were going to place the ball, but in the end, Brazil did have their opportunities but failed to convert them into goals. It will be great fun to see how these two teams match up in the future, especially with the US picking up their possession game and giving us creative players as talented as the Brazilians.
Im not sure how you can say that more creative players are coming. ODP coaches (at least in Fl) look for one thing. SIZE. We had 5 girls from our team try out for the state pool. The one kid that got selected was a head taller than the rest of our players that tried. She rarely gets off the bench in our gmes, and when she does, the fouls come fast and regular. The four kids that didn't get selected are far superior technically and all around better players. Fl ODP coaches need to get their head out of their a** and start selecting the best, not tallest, players.

ODP is a joke. Florida's prescence on the national youth soccer scene is a joke, not because we have have lesser quality players, but becasue of who runs the show here. Look at the WNT roster, mostly Calif, NJ and other big states. Texas is the next big wave. FL? pffffft.

Forget Florida. It's not about teaching the kids here. It's about turf wars and winning games at any expensive, even to the exclusion of developing players. Players who do get developed, are developed because their parents either paid for special trainers, or the parents had skills to teach the kids.
And it's so darn competitive that relationships are strained after the kids go off to college. How do you build a soccer community with that kind of atmosphere?
Florida ODP is the biggest waste of time. get rid of all of the bums that are involved. start over
Thank you...you said it. The problem is not US Womens Soccer. We still have the number 1 program in the world. The problem is Florida...plain and simple Floridians suck...the parents, the coaches, FYSA, they all stink. The whole state is infested with the Latinos...we need to send them back on their boats.

Nobody agreed with your extended assessment, racist.

Unfortunately for you and all your KKK buddies, nobody is going back anywhere anytime soon, you better get use to your Latino neighbors or move somewhere else yourself because the Latino population will continue to rise steadily, not much you or anyone else can do, sorry about that.
I was only able to see the ending of the women's gold medal game. I'm watching the game from the start on nbc.com right now.
Here's what I see in the first 28 minutes:
1. The US has better opportunities to score. Partly because the US has the ability to shoot from distance.
2. Why is dribbling the ball into the corner and kicking the ball off a defender's shin creative? I saw some decent combination plays from the US ending with the last pass being a little too hard. One touch combination play is just as creative as dribbling into the corners.
3. Carli Lloyd dribbles when the moment is right, and passes the ball when she should. Her defense is outstanding, too.
4. Brazil likes to foul in US half of the field. Hitting someone while their back is facing you should be saved for Mixed Martial Arts fighting. The US players are much more disciplined and sound defensively.
5. Both teams are playing hard as hell. This makes beautiful soccer extremely difficult, but the game is very watchable and both teams are trying to play. The US has played the ball out of the back corners at least three times now under intense pressure sometimes with crazy Brazilian slide tackles. The sliding may be more intimidation than anything else. It's hard to concentrate with bodies sliding by.
6. Lori Chalupny is not confident on the ball. Lindsey Tarpley is forcing passes and then over-compensating by hitting passes too soft. Something may be wrong with Heather O'Reilly. She is depending on her speed too much.
7. Where is this first half Brazilian domination I've been hearing about?
8. Brazil has the skill. Why do they like to hit from behind so much? A calf contusion should slow down Heather later on. I believe you foul from behind because you're either too lazy, or not good enough defensively to be in a position to make a tackle or contain. There is no contain from behind, so you have to foul.
Oh, well. *pressing play* More comments later. My computer doesn't have the power to view the game and do other things at the same time.
Forgot to mention. I turned the volume down to zero, because the commentators were too annoying. How hard is it to describe the game? I don't want to hear your reason why someone should be open in the midfield or what you think someone needs to do to be more effective.

As a former professional player, I could not agree with you less. Almost everything that you wrote is in direct contrast to what I observed. Not interested in going point by point but I cannot agree with almost any of your assessment.
I did not see the game but from everything that I have read from sports reporters who reviewed the game, we were fortunate to have won and we were dominated for most of the game. I don't know what game the other guy was watching. I am going to watch it online to see for myself but I have not read anywhere that we outplayed Brazil except for the one guy on here.

As a clearly superior intellect (I used to coach at Man U, but it bored me), I don't have the time to tell you why, so I will simply point out that you are a putz.

I would also have to disagree with your observation of the game as well. The only good thing that Carli Lloyd did was score the goal. Her play in the midfield was nothing at all to be proud of. I do feel that the defense played a decent game not perfect but it was definately good enough to get the result.
