    Another coach faces se*x charges

A 23-year-old Menomonee Falls man who was a coach and Hamilton School District employee was charged today with se*xually assaulting a female student.

It's the fourth time in recent months in Waukesha County that a coach has been charged with se*xually assaulting a student and the second time this month that someone involved in the Hamilton district has been arrested on those charges.

Matthew A Pagel was charged with two counts of second-degree se*xual assault of a child and three counts of se*xual assault of student by school staff, all felonies. He also was charged with three misdemeanor counts of se*x with a child 16 or older, according to a criminal complaint filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court.

Pagel, a 2002 Hamilton High School graduate, was a special education aide during the 2006-'07 school year for the district and coached several freshman and junior varsity sports, the district said in a statement.

The district had conducted a background check of Pagel and found no criminal record.

District officials said they learned that Pagel had been arrested Tuesday in connection with a relationship involving a minor.

"This is a highly distressing situation," Hamilton Superintendent Kathleen Cooke said in the statement. "When rumors first came to our attention last week about an inappropriate relationship between an adult and student, we immediately referred the matter to the Waukesha Sheriff's Department."

Pagel's arrest comes on the heels of charges being filed on Feb. 14 against John M. Jagla, 24, a volunteer coach at Hamilton High School in connection with the se*xual assault of a 17-year-old student whom he met at a summer basketball camp, according to a criminal filed in his case.

In January, Timothy J. Steimel, 25, of West Allis, was accused of se*xually assaulting four boys while he was a volunteer coach at Waukesha West High School. He no longer coaches there.

In late November, Todd J. Huth, 57, now of Kenosha, was charged with five counts of se*xual assault of a student by a school staff member. The then-girls varsity assistant basketball coach at Mukwonago High School was accused of having se*xual inter*course with a 16-year-old Mukwonago girl.

On Wednesday, Court Commissioner Laura Florian Lau ordered Pagel to be held on $25,000 bail. She also ordered him to have no contact with his victim and with Hamilton High School, no unsupervised contact with any female under 18 and not use computers.

Pagel is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 27.
