    Do - not - sign - early

Has your club told you that they will send out offers to people prior to tryouts?

Did they say you'd have 24 hours to accept after the offer was extended?

    Don't.

    Just say no.

Don't let them dictate to you.

Go to as many tryouts as you can manage.

What are they going to do to you if you take longer than 24 hours?

Ignore their offer email until you've taken the time to investigate all the other options out there.

Start attending practices at other clubs now to get a feel for things.

If your kid is a stud this is sound advice. If your kid barely made a team and the team is a good team with a wait list then know they'll drop you and move to the next player. It's understandable that they want to lock in their rosters. If your player is in the bottom 1/3 of a roster always seek options this time of year on other teams. You have no idea how it may turn out. Best of luck to all - it's a stressful time that doesn't need to be

Sounds ok if you are looking to leave a current team/club, but what if they give you an offer for the team you want to be on? For example, if a kid is on the top team at a club they like and loves the team, and wants to remain on this team, and gets an early offer for said team, we are supposed to table the offer, and try out for a bunch of teams and clubs we don't want to be a part of? No, thank you. My kid makes the team they want to make, and they get the early offer, then we accepting it.

How do you know the team will be the same as your child remembers? Maybe people will leave. What if the team takes a few new kids with obnoxious parents that yell things from the sideline? What if your kid makes the team early but the coaches have taken on a new striker and they have your kid pegged for defense now? You won't know until it's too late because you were tripping over yourself to sign early.

Other option is sign and be willing to walk if something better comes along. You'll probably lose $500 (because they all want a deposit along with a signed contract) but most clubs won't hold you to the commitment as long as they have others waiting for a spot.

This is our quandary. Will be looking at three clubs, and potentially leaving our club for the first time next year. Issue is take the early offer, as in year's past, and run the risk of being left behind?

Because every year my kid has gotten an early offer, the coach has told us who else on the team that has already gotten that early offered too. And then the parents discuss, and we can pretty much figure out most of the roster before signing anything. And nothing wrong with defense, that is where my kid plays anyway. 😉

Since scheduling all the try outs on the same day wasn't getting the job done now the clubs have switched to not having try outs for the ones they want at all. Totally lazy and self serving for the coaches while playing to the parental egos of type A tiger moms and dads. It's a win win. Secure as much money as possible with the least expenditure of effort. Well done pay for play coaches.

Your coach has a big mouth and should not be sharing info like that with a chosen few...must be a nice, tight team with no favorites, right?

I guess it comes down to confidence - if your waiting for tryouts then take the offer from your current club. Most of the top team rosters are full with maybe 1-3 spots left. The better players signed (both within a club and those changing) about 2-3 weeks ago.

True. We've been trying out with one on the side (their recommendation vs. waiting for try-outs), but won't get an offer until actually in their system.

Team #3 is more of a longshot anyway...

If a kid is missing from practice lately it usually indicates that they are trying out somewhere else.

There's lots of "dentists appointments" this time of year :). Coaches know what's going on. If they hold it against your kid then that isn't a coach you want anyway

I'm not sure waiting to sign would prevent that anyway. You could try to figure out the team by who attends tryouts, but even then you have no idea who will decide to sign up. You won't know much about crazy parents either unless they are ranting during tryouts.
