Illinois wants to ban HS teams from Post Season w/ too many cards

Illinois implemented a new rule this year where if a HS team gets 25+ yellow cards, they can be banned from the post season. 25 is a good amount of cards, but this seems way too harsh. doesn't seem like a good way to keep kids involved with a rising trend of top club players deciding to forego HS seasons to keep training with their club. Anyone else think this is a ridiculous rule?

25+ yellows is a lot. I think Mass penalizes teams with over 6 or 7?

Assuming they play 20 games max, that is 1.25 cards per game. Seems appropriate.

This is an excellent rule. If a HS coach can't teach players to play intelligent, skillful, finesse soccer, as well as instill self-discipline, then he or she shouldn't be coaching, period.

Here's the copy/paste from the MIAA site:

77.2.16 For purposes of obtaining tournament eligibility, no team may exceed a four red or thirteen yellow cards during
the regular season. Delay of game encroachment and deliberate (intentional) handball are infractions, which will continue
to be enforced and penalized. The impact of these infractions will be assessed and will be considered towards tournament
          ineligibility.

So the kids in MA have a limit of nearly half of what they are proposing in IL.

Not sure why you combine the two issues. Are you saying the yellow card limit and kids not playing high school soccer are related?

Why is is ridiculous? They are trying to put a cap on too much reckless play.

If you child likes to play "on the edge", maybe find another sport for him to play

wow, didn't realize Mass allowed only half that. I came here to play college, didn't play HS here...I'm saying the more rules high school leagues make that aren't present in club, the more it may turn players off. illinois had 30 teams last season that would've missed post season due to cards.

25 cards is nuts! Ive been coaching HS soccer forever and ive never had a squad with more than 6.

The threshold for warnings must be very very different. Refs here almost never card players. It is a rare event. Even for dangerous play. Typically, they get more than one verbal warning prior to the first card.

yeah this must be a difference in officiating between different states

If there is a less talented team they often resort to thuggery and fouling to target the other teams best players. This site has been complaining of this practice in club soccer for years. I applaud any organization that tries to eliminate these tactics. Jmo

That certainly happens often enough in HS soccer and teams that rely on it should be kept out of higher-level play. A coach who encourages that behavior or can't control his players shouldn't be coaching. But the limit for Illinois seems crazy - maybe it is explained by officiating?. Still, we've had 7 games this year and our team I think has had one.

MIAA has pretty stiff penalties for suspension of games for players and coaches accumulating cards over the season as well.

I'm all for it. Refs don't card nearly enough as it is. There's letting them play and then there's letting them play within the LOTG.

Professional leagues penalize players for card accumulation, too. So this is not a new idea. The more HS soccer would just adopt the international rules, the better off the game would be.

Also, Mass. HS officials rarely use their cards, compared to what you'd see for this age group in other leagues. It's unfortunate, but seems unlikely to change.
