What is the system in the DCL? In terms of the standings, do only the games within your section count? That is, if you are a DCL Large team, do only games against DCL Large opponents count?
In terms of making the postseason tournament, is it overall record, league/section record or something else that counts?

All games count but large only play small once. Small play small twice and large play large twice. There is a special MIAA rule that allows Div. 2 and Div. 3 schools to discount results against larger division schools for the purposes of qualification - but that is not peculair to the DCL it appplies across the state.

Bedford and LS were tied 1 - 1 at half in pretty even game. LS coach must have made an adjustment at 1/2 time and deserves a lot of credit because 2nd half was all LS. Could have been 10 - 1.

It applies for seeding for state tournament though. Is it both first and second place small and large sides get into tournament regardless of their record? That's the only advantage a league record gets you unless the goal is to just win your side of the league.

Anyone associated with AB knows that WA ALWAYS puts up its best effort against AB. You poster are a troll and not from AB.
It should be a very good game - especially since it is on AB's field and not the Ghostly - er ghastly - mudhole at WA.

Doubt it will be close. 3-0 would be about right.
Score was 3-1. Pretty close prediction although AB did give up a goal. Must have had the backup GK in during garbage time.

Nope - she didn't get in - She did in the Algonquin game and made several great saves. WA played very well as did AB.

You must be kidding? The level of soccer being played today is much higher than it ever was in terms of talent/tactics/technique. This is not across the board, but with the three teams mentioned above, the majority of their starters come from a high-level club experience, Maple D1 or higher (Stars/MPS/NEFC) Most DCL schools try to play a possession style game, and granted not all have the depth to accomplish this effectively, it is night and day from the kick ball played in the past. I would just say there is more, and will continue to be more parity, as more and more HS teams have club players who have been playing and training year round. Of course there are some great individual players who graduate that can't be replaced, but overall the level and strength of girls soccer being played today far exceeds "previous" years.

The poster that said that the Eagles U-17 team could beat most of these teams is a little off track. Maybe a U-18 team of all seniors would but a all junior team probably not. Most players on H.S. teams are club players. I looked at the starting girls line up of a south shore town and the starting line up was all club players of different age groups, the pick of the litter so to say. 3 Freshmen, 4 Soph, 2 juniors and 2 seniors. All very good club teams. To keep things going they just need 2 freshmen next year to fill in for the leaving seniors. I think the bench had four club players

Sorry to say but that poster was correct. With the exception of AB, the top three Club teams at U16 and U17 in MA would beat every single public high school team in MA. No doubt. Say what you want about the team you mentioned on the south shore and the high number of high level club players on many high school teams, but the Stars, Scorpions, MPS and Eagles teams ranked in the top 80 nationally (most in the 20's!) have the experience and years of playing together against the top teams from around the country that the local high school teams don;t have. Add to the amazing number of high schools that play their players out of their best positions and the fact that many of these so called club players you mention are playing for local clubs without the high level national experience and there's too many weaknesses comparatively.
Many of these club teams would beat college teams for goodness sake!

Here is the problem with your statement...This players are playing on those club teams...and they are playing the same positions... Good club coaches...they are bringing their club experience to the High School level....It is not mutually exclusive...The national level experience is helping...what fun for them to show their skills to their classmates rather than a dozen parents in lancaster or Las Vegas.

Everybody, except you apparently, agrees that MM's ratings are the most accurate, because he bases his ratings on a mathematical algorithm of head to head competition.

yes of course an algorithm s the best and only fair computation as opposed to head to head competition between teams of equal caliber. MM algorithm that removes points from a better team playing against a weaker team because they tied or only won by 1 goal despite any mater of reasons is fair and appropriate in all cases.......... Just like GotSoccer if flawed, so is the almighty MM (who only rates two girls age groups btw).

I know that it would be a sort of form of suicide for O3 to post here, however, perhaps she can clarify the issue of DCL standings. Do all games against league opponents (large and small) count in your conference record? I agree with a previous poster that if they don't, that is a different system form the state's other split leagues like the Baystate or MVC.

If you are a DCL small school you play each small opponent twice and each DCL large school once. The smalls play for the DCL small championship. Only the record versus the small schools count for that title.
The same is true for the DCL Large schools. They play the large schools twice and each small school once.
However, the entire record and percentage of points earned across the entire schedule (large and small and non-league) is the basis for getting into the state championships at the end of the year.

True - PLUS the top two teams on the large side and the top two teams on the small side get into the tournament even if they would not otherwise qualify (which they usually would).

This is different from every other conference in the state that plays a split 2/1 schedule. Why? In all those other conferences, all in-conference games count. The 2/1 split keeps it fair for all schools, but again, why not count all the games? It has nothing to do with tournament qualification (except for the top two spots) And I think someone else was right. If the games against the other division are non-league games; why make the big D1 teams play the little D3 ones?

If the games against the other division are non-league games; why make the big D1 teams play the little D3 ones?
Any chance this has something to do with football - which drives all these realignments anyhow, right?

Great question.
Last year L/S Boys won the DCL large. L/S had the best record against DCL large schools.
Westford had the higher overall winning percentage against the entire schedule.
Westford boys were seeded higher in the tournament than the L/S boys.

no, because all of the rest of the conferences with the 2/1 split also have football. Playing a 10 game league schedule is ok, it just makes no sense to mandate games between D1 and D3 teams, if they are not going to count toward your conference record. Wouldn't it be to all of these teams advantage, to be able to schedule additional non-league matches that would provide genuine competition? What good is it for A/B, a school with a very large enrollment, to have to play Tyngsborough?

except that Boston Latin is a very large D1 school. Arguably, they should be competitive in most sports. That is not going to be the case between a D1 and D3 entry.

No -- football is tied to your divisional placement, so all the teams in a conference (or sub-conference) play in the same division and you qualify for the football pay-offs by winning your conference. There are examples of teams being moved based on performance, as opposed to enrollment, but when you do, it effects your divisional placement. BTW, the DCL Large is Division 1A in football. The small is Division 2A.

I don't think that if a school is in the DCL Large in football, it means that the school is in the DCL Large in other sports. Correct?

You can check and see on the MIAA web site for alignments. It has to do with relative boys and girls enrollment #s. I think there is also a petition process. It also seems to be different in some schools across sports. I think Westwood is Div 2 this year up from Div 3. They were like 4 students away from being Div 2 two years ago. Nauset should be Div 1 but I think they petitioned to stay at Div 2 for another year, while Sandwich was happy to come down to 'Div. 2

The question was about Large v Small not what division you were in.
You can still check the MIAA because the # students Boys vs Girls may be different. The alignments do change. For tournment purposes the Division is very important especially if you are around a .500 record. There is alot of scrabbling lately with changing of divisions and making them small and large. The Hock I think will be adding a team, maybe Attleboro. Middlesex may be adding Arlington. Winchester, a Div 2 school by population, is I think a Div 1 school in girls soccer by petition.
My answer to your question is that it depends and you have to check what is up this year. The MIAA likes to have the large schools Div 1 or 1a vs the small schools Div 2 or 2a. Some schools may have a great football tradition and want to be in large schools even though low pop but their soccer stinks..

So for non-league games WA chooses Chelmsford and Central Catholic? Why? To get more Lowell Sun coverage and up their stars' points? It would be better to skip the non-league games entirely like L-S. Is the Merrimack Valley conference really strong and we're missing something down here in the southern parts of the DCL?

From HS Harriet on the Girls High School thread -
In the Merrimack Valley, Central Catholic is firmly atop the Large Division (6-0-1 Conf, 6-1-2 overall) Another long-time qualifier, Andover, is at 2-4-1 and struggling to get to the magic .500 mark. Billerica is also under .500 (3-5-1 overall) but one of those two will likely earn an automatic birth by finishing 2d to CC in the large. Haverhill and Dracut lead the MVC small. Dracut at 6-3-1 is looking like a top 10 entry in the D2 north.
Looks like the Central Catholic game might be competitive as they are the class of the league although it appears that they tied and lost their two non-conference games.

Is the Merrimack Valley conference really strong and we're missing something down here in the southern parts of the DCL?
Choice in non-league games isn't always easy. First, there needs to be a mutual desire to play each other. Westford has been a very good team, but without a D1 North title (or better) they certainly don't have the cache that some other teams might have in attracting opponents. Second, WA has one of the worst home fields that I know of. Do you really want to travel all the way up to Westford to play on that cow pasture? Third, because the Middlesex doesn't play any non-league games (they have an 18 game conference schedule) you lose a pool of some very good potential north opponents. So you are left with either considerable travel to the south, or playing closer teams from the MVC or the odds and ends from the other North Conferences. Finally, some opponents are traditional. For example Peabody has traditionally played intra-city rival Fenwick. North Andover has traditionally played neighboring Andover. This can further limit the pool of potential non-league opponents. So playing a team like Chelmsford can make some sense. Personally, I think that theese two non-laeague games will provide better competition than the majority of WAs conference match-ups. The DCL is a strong league, but there are still only 5 (maybe 6) decent teams out of the 12. So, these games have good value. I certainly don't believe either is a patsy, added to the schedule to pad WAs records and their player's stats.
As for Central Catholic: They have been a D2 entry (and a strong one) up until this year. This year they have moved up to D1, and largely because of the decline of Andover, they have emerged as the MVCs best team. Like all Catholic schools they have some unique advantages - and disadvantages. Obviously they can draw stiudents (and players) from many communities and yes... kids will go there, in part for the athletics - including girls soccer! However, they can never be sure what will enter with each class. Unlike a system like A/B, where because of their excellent town youth program, and the abundance of local grown club players, a coach can be secure that each and every class will include some decent players. The catholics can never be sure. CC lost a very good class last year, and has done well this year, but they are not the level of the DCLs Big 3.

I doubt it. It's probably the same person who is trying to make trouble for KS and EN on the LS team. I don't understand why They are just kids. In my mind that is a good question, especially since they kept Newburyport and Weymouth on the board. If you look at the splits it is pretty equally D1 and D2 as well as South and North. Depending on who they replaced that editorial balance would be broken. But I think both deserve a top 20 spot.

Unfortunately they are only posting a small portion of the DCL games - AB is shown as 4-0-0 (large side games ) when they were actually 9-0-0. That skews the scoring records as well as goals and assists from the large side games are all that are being tallied. Since LS and WA both tied each other and lost to AB their large side records would not be as good.

You're kidding, right? Right now they have the same number of points. By the end of the season they will have played the same number of games in the small and this can all be ordered exactly. Winning DCL small is pretty much worth nothing but entry into the tournament if they don't otherwise have the .500 record. Geez.

If they all tie for first, with the same number of points, then I believe that they all automatically qualify for the tournament - regardless of overall winning%. But obviously if their are multiple champions there is no "second" place qualifier. I also believe that if two or more teams are tied for second, then they all also qualify - so long as there was not co-champions. I also was slightly off regarding the rule allowing teams to disregard higher divisional opponent's results. You must have 70% - NOT 50% - of your required games be against higher divisional opponents.

Wouldn't Wayland's conference record of 3-0-1 be better than CC's 3-1-1?
Both teams have 7 points so they are TIED.
(However, Wayland has played one fewer DCL small game at this point.)

I was at the LS - Arlington game scouting LS for an upcoming game. Arlington has some fast forwards and plays good defense. They are weak in the midfield. LS is very impressive. They move the ball well with one touch passes and switch the field often and effectively. They play much better soccer than I was led to believe on this forum. Almost no kick and run. Their strongest players are in the back and midfield. Center back #10, left back #4, Center mid #24, and Left mid #16 are their strongest players. LS won 4 - 0.

The best news for L/S as they enter the tournament is that they are winning without KS who is injured. When she returns, they may have a chance to make a run at winning the North. A/B looks vulnerable.

Those articles are supplied by the coach. From an editorial stand-point, they are great space fillers. Even for the Globe.
Wayland shouldn't be struggling to beat Lynnfield. That result, combined with Arlington Catholic's wins over Arlington and Waltham raise questions about the strength of the DCL - beyond the Big 3.

No, they call into a central number and leave the info. Sometimes they talk to a staff reporter, other times it is just left on a machine. Sometimes the info comes in from both coaches. Staff writes a brief synopsis or short article. Like the Globe did for the Wayland/ Lynnfield match. However, there is no reporter on site making observations.

If anyone has seen Wayland play, the score should not be a surprise. They are a very aggressive direct team and LS is more possession oriented. Without their goal scorer to keep it close, Wayland's long ball style probably let them get in behind a slow methodical LS defense and wreak havoc. Not my favorite style of play, but very effective in the high school arena.

I think it had less to do with their goal scorer than LS losing their fast back defender who went down on a vicious head-to-head with a Wayland player early in the game. The LS defense is completely dependent on her against a fast attacking team like Wayland since she is the only one with speed in the back. The head-to-head was ugly and the Wayland girl had to be taken away by ambulence. Any news on her and the Sudbury girls condition?

Wayland's defense was strong and did a great job clearing the ball away from goal. They easily controlled the midfield and the offense worked hard and scored 3 goals. It was very unfortunate for each team to lose a player on a hard collision. I hope both are well soon.

Is there any status on both girls? Without #10 in the back, LS' defense is very vulnerable to long balls over the middle. Was she out the whole game?

A "slow methodical defense" doesn't sound like a winning formula at any level of soccer.

Read the post again. One possible explanation for the close score put forth was injuries (which includes illness).
The AB star players (Brock, Margolius, etc.) are capable of playing a full 80 minutes at full tilt. So unless AB was without their starters, a short bench would probably not explain the result.

I was at the game. I know a few of the younger LS girls. LS problem was definitely in the back. The girls did not know when and how to step forward when necessary and the marking was terrible. I was also surprised at their lack of speed. None of the defenders could keep up with the Wayland forwards. I don't know the girl who got injured but I did think that LS was dominating the game before the collision.
One additional comment, I'm not completely clear about the relationship of the LS coach with the Wayland players and parents but several seem to have some hard feelings from previous experience playing with her as club players. I guess she cut several of the girls who now play for Wayland (who are very good, by the way) I thought the cheering by the Wayland crowd was at times over the top but I guess this bad history explains some of it so any LS fans out there, please forgive our poor behavior at times.

Don Cherry was the coach of the Lunch Pail Gang Bruins, a team which played pretty ugly hockey, winning a bunch of games by outworking, grinding down their opponents. They got little respect outside of Beantown hockey fanatics.
A couple years back Don, or his dog Blue, adopted the Stars U17 Rovers. It's unlikely Don is awake most nights to post after 8 pm, so many suspect Blue.

According to the parents, she took over the Bolts team and cut several players from Wayland before the season to bring on more Sudbury kids. In addition, she coached several during her time at the Bolts. That is what I was told. It wasn't my kid. I did say to one of the Wayland parents that it was time to get over it.

Amazing. The injury would have to have been incurred by current seniors (unless they were playing up at the time) and at the end of their U11 year. A long time to hold a grudge. Maybe yesterday's win will let the players and parents move on? By the way, how many players can this have affected? One or two?

You say you were at the game but all goals were on long shots, hardly defenders - don't remember any forwards getting in for close shots - perhaps misplayed by goalie? or maybe some truth to disgruntled parents
Not sure I follow this. Are you saying that the goals came on long shots so that it wasn't the defenders fault that goals were scored? Hard to believe the LS of L-S would make three GK errors to let in goals but anyone can have a bad day. What do disgruntled parents have to do with how goals are scored?

Getting cut implies that they have played previously with the club, not that they are signing up. Getting cut means they are offered no other options at that club, but set adrift and told they aren't good enough at age 10. Yes cuts at older ages are part of the game of life, but I don't agree that age 10 cuts in this fashion are good for the game of soccer. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

So you think if On3 cut some Wayland kids at U11 and replaced them with Sudbury kids (who may have been better), their parents should still hold a grudge? I think that's a bit insane. They need to get a life and move on.

Seriously, how many Wayland players could have been cut by On3? This can't really be as big a deal as people are making it out to be, can it?

Read the post again. One possible explanation for the close score put forth was injuries (which includes illness).
The AB star players (Brock, Margolius, etc.) are capable of playing a full 80 minutes at full tilt. So unless AB was without their starters, a short bench would probably not explain the result.
Can anyone comment who was at the game? Susy???

I get a huge chuckle about Americans and their view of substitutions in football. You view it like hockey or basketball. We encourage that view by practicing open substituion in the lower levels. Including High School. But for the rest of the world, football is a 90 minute game, and starters are usually expected to play the full 90. There are specialists who may be brought in to change the complexion of a game, introduce a new formation or expose a specific match-up. But the idea that players should be subbed for a rest, and then brought back out refreshed, is purely American. Almost as unique as the use of time-outs in HS or college.

And one of the contributing factors that US teams, all US teams, play as they do.

The Wayland webpage has links to some video clip highlights. For example, look at how the goals were scored against C-C (a pre-season favorite to do well in D1):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVS6dYk68-I&feature=email
Although you wouldn't mistake this for top level club soccer, I don't see a lot of long balls being used to create scoring opportunities. Any comments from those with a more experienced eye?

The 4th goal in your highlight reel was well developed. The first 3 were quite random. I truly hope you folks from the leafy western suburbs don't actually think of this as quality soccer.

The point that's been made is that Wayland uses its players' strengths well but that it is not beautiful possession soccer. Players in other leafy suburbs play differently -- some better, some worse. Jealous of our leaves? They'll be gone soon.

If you watch the video the goals (exept for the 4th) look very savable. Is that the #1 LS Goalie? At 3:40 in the video you can see the problem with the LS defense. The Wayland cross is made and 3 Wayland players are left unmarked in front of the LS goal. The LS coach should show this to her defenders as a teaching tool. That is terrible defensive shape and positioning.

As an outsider looking in and from the 4 minute video clip, I don't see a significant difference in the style of play of either team.

I agree. Keeper had a rough day. Way too many passes from both sides lofted forward back or across. The play was not close to being crisp soccer. Maybe it was just a off day for both teams.

Probably depends on lineups and who is available. According to posts on this thread, LS's KS is out for season with ACL tear, their strong Center Back was injured in the Wayland game, and who ever else may be injured this time of year could have a big effect. WA has some very strong and speedy forwards, and judging by the video highlight of the Wayland -LS game, their defense will be very vulnerable to this. WA has the leading scorer in the league (AS), and in the past LS's KS was a league leading scorer as well. Without her, others will really have to step up to the plate. There hasn't been much written in this thread about WA, so I'm not sure about their injury report, but like a lot of teams at this stage of the season, injuries tend to pop up which can definitely affect the outcome.

With all of the injuries this year, how does that effect a senior who has already committed to a school. Will the school take it back or not support the athlete as previously assumed?

Always a possibility but the higheranked the program the less likely they will be willing to get that reputation.

SM is safe at BC. KS is safe at Amherst. Those coaches would not take back a committment.

Neither school offers committments lightly. Kids get injured all the time. I have never heard of a top school taking away a committment for a minor injury.

Not to mention that Amherst is a D3 school with ACADEMICS being the reason why kids are accepted. Not to say that soccer didn't help in the admissions process, but one has to be an EXCELLENT student to gain admission regardless of their athletic accomplishments.

I thought I saw a news report linked in this forum that included her name.
From a recent Lowell Sun article:
Westford 3
Bedford 0
Sophomore striker Dani Trani struck for 2 goals for the second straight game -- giving her 6 in 6 games since returning from an injury -- as the DCL co-runnerup Grey Ghosts improved to 9-1-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the Large School Division on Wednesday.
Senior striker, captain and DCL scoring leader Alexa St. Martin (7-12-19 points) added the final WA goal, as well as setting up Traini's first tally, while junior center-midfielder Jennifer Larrick assisted on the other two scores.
Alyssa Whitcomb made 8 saves for her 3rd individual shutout and the team's 5th overall, as the Division 1 North Tournament qualifying Grey Ghosts won their 4th straight and stretched the unbeaten streak through 5 games (4-0-1).
Also playing well for the winners were center-midfielder Hayley Katkowski, fullback Caty Sheridan and fullback Annie Keyes.

Jen is playing. St. Martin was out with an injury for most of the 2008 hs season and she has moved forward so that may account for a difference from last year since the offensive players get more press.

From Lowell Sun-
Westford 0
Lincoln-Sudbury 0
Neither team was able to score during a battle between two of the top teams in the DCL.
Second-place Lincoln-Sudbury (9-1-2) remains a point ahead of third-place WA (9-1-3). Senior Alyssa Whitcomb was tremendous in making 8 saves. Whitcomb, who shook off being involved in a couple of collisions, registered her fourth shutout of the fall and made a couple of diving stops.
